Collar or Harness?
Hi People, can anybody give me advice? What is the best for walking my dogs? they are now 7 months old and heavy pullers, we currently use collars but would love to hear the opinions of other owners.

Re: Collar or Harness?
When I first got Moo we used a harness as I felt I had more control in teaching her to walk nicely, now we just use collar

Re: Collar or Harness?
We use both collar and harness with a double ended police style lead. Xtradog harness, ezydog collar.

Re: Collar or Harness?
Tried Flo on a collar but she escapes those too easily when refusing to walk after several try's with different harnesses, we finally got one that she can't escape from, however, she walks so nicely now we could probably get away with just a collar.

Re: Collar or Harness?
I use both, El perro collar and trixie harness with a halti double lead attached to both. Used a halti previously but don't need it anymore

Re: Collar or Harness?
Harness here, definitely. My dog pulled a lot when he first came out the rescue, when he was a poor lost soul and quite hyper. After much gentle training, he doesnt do it anymore, but we remain with the harness as I am certain it is more comfortable for him. The harness allows pressure (if needed) to remain on a part of his body - his ample chest and shoulders - that is suited to take the strain. If he sees a cat while on lead, he tends, unfortunately, to go like a rocket and needs to be stopped so that no one gets injured. Being a staffie (or staffx, more accurately), he also has an extremely ample neck, but i still think he could damage his throat if stopped abruptly when in hot pursuit. It's for his safety and comfort.

Re: Collar or Harness?
Hi Leon. We use a Julius K9 harness - look them up, they are based in Cape Town. Our 2 are pullers so these harnesses have helped to settle them a little and they're really comfy.

Re: Collar or Harness?
Both at the same time. A no pull harness mainly but if we need more head control we switch to the collar.

Re: Collar or Harness?
Peppa's a terrible puller! My local dog training group said harnesses are a bad idea as it encourages pulling and they recommended a half check collar (which I hate using and I don't feel really makes a difference). I'm a little confused now, should I give a harness ago? (sorry for gatecrashing your post Leon SA)

Re: Collar or Harness?
I use a harness and much prefer it to a collar especially if you use a
long lead as a sudden pull taking up the lead length can seriously damage their neck or throat.
Have never understood why trainers say a Harness encourages pulling,
I haven't found that.

Re: Collar or Harness?
I feel much safer with a harness, a collar can too easily slip off, especially on Staffies as their necks are so thick

Re: Collar or Harness?
Harness works best for us, i'm not sure which type/company is it, but it's so much easier to walk with, georgia jumps into it happily when its time for a walk
Re: Collar or Harness?
Collar or harness depends on where we are walking, if at the park or woods Rocky has his harness with the extender lead attached. When near any traffic or people he has his lead attached to his collar. When travelling in the car he has his harness with the seat belt clip attached.

Re: Collar or Harness?
they wear a collar and harness but only walked via the harness, I have found they pull less when using the harnesses and when I have tried using just collars they just choke themselves. Why not try colla only, harness only and collar harness combo and see what works best for you and your dog?

Re: Collar or Harness?
Why are they heavy pullers?
I would suggest working with each dog alone on their pulling so you don't have to worry about what you use.
I would suggest the head halti or gentle leader for leash training.

Re: Collar or Harness?
Ralphy wears a handmade leather half choke collar all the time. But... as a bit of a puller we walk on a harness, have tried a couple the best is the perfect fit harness, (available on line) and comes in three parts hence perfect fit. He definitely walks better on the harness. First five mins regardless are a bit hectic but then we settle and even my 70 year old mum walks him on the harness.
