collar or harness
hi everyone, tyler has had his second injection so we want to get him out hopefully to burn off some of his energy, however we have tried using a collar or a harness and when we put either on he starts shivering and it makes him very quiet and he will not do anything at all except hide,i know its strange for him but i wondered if this is normal

Re: collar or harness
Have you tried just letting the lead trail behind him while in the garden to give him chance to get used to it ?

Re: collar or harness
Not abnormal at all. Just practice putting them on in the house and reward his acceptance. Let the lead trail as well to allow him to get acclimated to the equipment.

Re: collar or harness
Very normal! As Jstaff has said, lots of reward and gentle fitting on the harness. Taught lots of pups to wear them in kennels, he will get there

Re: collar or harness
Just like everyone mentioned, just put them on, practice and reward. When we got our 14 month old boy a few months ago he was terrified of collars, leads and harness. Not sure what happened with his previous owner and these things but after a couple of weeks he got used to them and absolutely loves all three now instead of running and hiding from them. His collar I sometimes put on in the house - we have a house cleaner that is scared of him so have to grab him quick sometimes when she comes downstairs so keep it on him when she's working but take it off when it's just us at home. His harness I used for walking as he does prefer it.
For about 6 weeks, we though he kept sitting and looking at the door because he wanted to go outside but it turns out he was telling us he wanted his harness on and to go for a walk. Figured it after the hubby moved all his leads and harness from the door he kept staring at to the front door and he moved with them

Re: collar or harness
I use a harness with Flo but had to try several before we settled on the one we have now. She was very good at escaping from them until we found her current one which has the loop for the lead quiet a way back from her neck.
It was from a French market stall that was set up in town so can't tell you the make unfortunately.
I think it's just a case of getting him used to it as others have said.

Re: collar or harness
Rocky was the same with a collar. I took advice on here but still he was petrified of the collar when I put it on him. I left him for hours with his collar on but all that time he hid under the table.
In the end I gave in as it seemed pointless. I do however use a harness to walk him which he is totally fine with.
I may try the collar again in due course.

Re: collar or harness
my moms dog hates having her harness put on,drops her head and tucks her tail away, but as soon as it's on she's going nuts to go out. no such problems with tessa she doesn't mind either although i only use the harness in the car as i think it's safer for her when she is clipped in on the back seat. i steer clear of the leather and brass staffie harnesses though as i think they give the wrong impression of the breed although i do have a nice dark red leather and brass staffie collar and lead for her.

Re: collar or harness
Suki was scared of walking at first as well, espically of trains and cars. She would only go so far from teh house and then sprint right back. I used food to lure her and tried going a little farther each day. I would also sit outside with her so she could get used to the sounds. So yes it's really just perserverance.

Re: collar or harness
Ok don't worry too much about this. Flo gives our neighbours a good laugh when my youngest tries to walk her. He gets her to the end of the drive, she then looks up at him as if to say "are you nuts I'm not going anywhere" and then sits down, if he persists, she then lays down and rolls over
This is where we learnt that she is quiet the harness escape artist ! He has never given her any cause to not want to walk, she is just stubborn. All Staff's have this trait I believe. She has tried it with me and I have even carried her to the end of the road !
In the end I just gestured to her that we were going weather she liked it or not and believe it or not, it worked ! I don't have any trouble at all now.
My son however, does. He gives in to her and she knows she can get away with it. It is perseverance and don't let him win. It's a battle of wills, be firm and all will eventually work.
Let us know how it goes Alan.
