Advice on Puppy Class and Boosters (PIC INSIDE) Empty Advice on Puppy Class and Boosters (PIC INSIDE)

Post by Krs1 Tue Apr 08 2014, 17:27

Only 12 days to go till I get my hands on Wilbert. Preparations are going well however I have one question left regarding when Wilbert can go to puppy class. Just to let you know the puppy class is a 6 week class (1 hour a week).

Wilbert will get his first injection on the 22nd April, his puppy class begins on the 3rd May, his second set of injections are on the 6th May.

The guy holding the puppy class said the following:

The pups can attend our course from the time they've had their first vaccination, so long as your vet is ok with it. Some vets are happy for them to attend straight away and other vets prefer them to wait until much later. We only allow puppies in the hall and never any adult dogs and the hall is disinfected after every class, so risk of disease is next to nothing.

I have spoken to vet (receptionist/nurse) and she said that it is the norm for the puppy to socialise with other dogs after the first week on their second set of injections - however I should still talk to the puppy school.

UMMMM - this will probably go in circles so really looking from advice here.

Just a note: All puppies that attend the class will be vaccinated with either first or second injections. The class starts on the 3rd May and the next set of classes start 6 weeks from then - I cannot enrol Wilbert on the next set of classes because he will be 20 weeks old and not allowed.

Finally here is a picture of the little guy Smile

I'm in the states so my info may vary but we went to the vet yesterday and asked the same question. She said to be safe 17 weeks. The last shot is at 16 weeks but a week incubation period is best practice.

I'm in the states as well and our vet offers a free puppy socialization class. It's available to puppy's who are clients and have passed inspection and have started their vaccines.

We actually went last night and it was awesome. Our Valentine is twelve weeks old and she was the youngest by a few weeks. There was a Portuguese Water Dog, Golden Retriever, and a Pit Bull. At first our little staffy was very cautious and curious. The other bigger dogs went first and then we added Valentine to the floor alone and introduced the dogs one at a time. I was worried that she would retreat from the bigger dogs but despite being half the size she tussled with the best of them. She was especially fond of the pit. I guess the similar breeds clicked. It was interesting to see how the older pups instantly dialed down the play energy to match valentine's level.

Rocky went to a puppy class and it was great for him.
My undestanding is that they are allowed to go anytime between thier first and second injections. They cant go after their second injection as they will likely to have been exposed to the outside world and the pups in the class aren't protected.

Your Pup is so cute.

I'm in SA. We got Roxy when she was just over 12 weeks so by the time puppy school started I think she was about 14 weeks or so. We got Vinny at 8 weeks and I think he was around 12 weeks when he started. If I remember correctly it was ok to take them one week after their second shots.

He is finally here!

Such a handsome guy! Love him so much.

Quick question: when he is asleep he breaths very quickly (16 times in 10 seconds). He is eating and drinking but has not done a poop yet. We have only had him for 6 hours so far.

As he's only been with you a few hours, everything is new. He might be a little anxious/nervous but will settle I'm sure and the breathing will settle as he becomes more comfortable in his new home

As for the toilet, nature will take its course, don't panic  Big Grin

totaly fine, his metabolic rate will be through the roof at his age and as he settles you will see it slow down as well. next few days will be very exciting and will put you on a mega learning curve. I have very fond memeories of mine as pups but seem to forget all the times they scared the crap out of me, woke me in the night, didnt understand bite inhibition, crapped everywhere, woke me in the night, got fed up of looking like a self harmer, got woken in the night, chewed up everything i hold dear, ate my wallet twice, woke me in the night, pulled the tv off its stand, ate my bed, ate my plants and did i mention....got woken in the night??? for me now, it was worth every second... good luck  Big Grin  it may seem hard but the memories you will have at the end of it all will be priceless.
