First season
Yay it's here, or should I say omg lol.
Well I've been reading and they have 2 stages one where they bleed and the other where they will let another dog mate, in short version.
So, do I keep her in at stage 2, and how the hell will I know when stage two has arrived as all dogs are different with length of season etc.
I would be devastated if another dog got to her, so want to do all I can to prevent this, but what about walks?
Advice please.
Oh, and I also tried to put a pair of boxers on her, well she had none of it so I gave up haha

Re: First season
When Moo was in season I still had to walk her as I don't have a garden and you couldn't keep a staffie in for a month anyway!! Just make sure she is firmly on lead and try to pick times and places where your not going to see other dogs, I chose to do a lot of road walking.
Lol on the boxers, I used puppy pads and they where a god send, saved hell of a lot of mess!

Re: First season
I'd definitely invest in the hygiene pads!
As to the season itself, it should last about 3 weeks (give or take a few days). The first 7-10 days she'll be interesting to dogs, but she won't want to mate - after that, watch her like a hawk!!!
Try to walk her at quiet times & where you know there are unlikely to be off-lead dogs. You may need to keep to the streets rather than the park!

Re: First season
Thanks both just looking up Mikki hygiene stuff. I also read to put menthol on the tail as it will mask the scent a female gives off. Anyone done this?

I know someone who does it when they're showing their bitch, but I don't know how well it works!

Re: First season

Re: First season
Clover is having her first season too. It seems to be lasting forever! lol I think we must be coming to the end of it now. I hope so because I don't really like walking her when I'm on my own when she's in season :S

Same here, I'm so tense as I would be heartbroken if a dog got to her, she's always on leash, but I'm still tense.
Janey I can't wait till it's all over.
Just been the vets to get worning and flea stuff and they said 3 months time, so that'll give me time to save up. But no matter how much it cost I couldn't go through all this mess again, and plus it must be p$ssing her right off.

Re: First season
Moo was booked in to be done, and on the day of the op she came into season, so me knowing nothing about what was going to happen went in blind! It was the worst month I think I ever had plus I'd only had her for about a week! She was done 3 months after!!

Lola was in season end of May into June, but just been over the fikled and all male dogs were very interested in her, trying to hump her. Could you be coming into season again?

Re: First season
Ladies I apologise now:
When do pups come into season the first time?
Can you not have them done before?
How much blood are we talking about? Bad cut or Niagra falls after a tomatoe fight?

Re: First season
Usually 6 to 8 months but could be anything up to 12, although I would have vet look over after 8 months.
There is a bit of blood, but I have a cream carpets so it showed, when I was at work (dark floor) you wouldn't have noticed. Used puppy pads (nappy for the blood) whilst home, she wore them overight and they where a god send! (there's a link above).
As to being neutered before the first season, well there is much debate on that one. My first was, imo I'm for it. But it's everyones own choice.

Re: First season
Cheers Janey, I was under the impression that it was neuter after 6 months whether theyve had a season or not - I will consult my vet about this.janey wrote:Usually 6 to 8 months but could be anything up to 12, although I would have vet look over after 8 months.

Re: First season
You can neuter before the first season, my first was and Moo was supposed to be, but she came into season on the day of her op, hence I hadn't experienced it either!
It was more the walking that was frustrating because she couldn't be off lead and I had to walk her at silly times so we didn't meet any males! After the season you have to wait 3 months until they can be done.
It really is up to you, there are benifits for and against. See what the vet says Xx

Re: First season
The first season is messy, well Lola's was and yes the pads are a godsend if youn can get them on without losing fingers
I don't think Lola is in season again so soon, but who knows?
I can't wait to have her done, then no male interest, hopefully.
