Puppy pad training
Could really do with some advice on this... I have been looking but I've not found an answer that's suits my question.
For the time being we are having to train our pup on pads. I'm praising him every time he uses the pad but it's few and far between at the minute. How am I best teaching him to use it the majority of the time? He is only 8 weeks so I don't know if it's too soon for that.

Just like training him to go outside really. Place him on the pad after feeding, sleeping, or eating and lots of praise. A confined area where he can't run off helps and you can use more than one pad at first to make the target area bigger. There are also sprays that are urine scented that will encourage him to use the pad or you can use a dab of actual urine.

Same as above, I tried pads for a few days when Zeus was 8 weeks old and found they weren't really for me, so I trained him to go outside after that. From 8 weeks to about 10/11 weeks, we took him out every 30 minutes or so, if he wee'd/poo'd, he'd get alot of praise and a treat, if he didn't, we'd just leave him to it. If he wee'd/poo'd anywhere else around the house, we wouldn't tell him off, we'd just completely ignore him, clean it up and move on. He realised fairly quickly, probably within 2 weeks, that if he does it outside, he'll get praise and a treat, if he does it inside, he'll get nothing. So it'd be the same principle as that. It can be challenging at times but stick to it.

Re: Puppy pad training
Can't really add to the advice given it's early day yet just keep at it. Some dogs take longer while other get it after a couple of weeks

Re: Puppy pad training
we used puppy pads and i can honestly say i wish i`d never used them. Lula would rip them up and it was a total waste of a pad. We did notice she never rip the newspaper we put down.
Lula seem to have more accidents in the house because of the pads. I also think it was a little confusing for her as well. Lula is doing so much better since we have started walking her and letting her into the back. she will now walk to the back door when she wants out.
good luck with the toilet training

Re: Puppy pad training
We also tried the pads at 8 weeks but she rather enjoyed chewing them up more than peeing on them. . So it was the outside in the garden method for us. Zara did really well and is now fully house trained at 6 months. It was a tough time though. Felt like I was living in the garden and those middle of the night calls were a killer but oh so worth it in the end. Good luck xx

Re: Puppy pad training
It's a tough one as every baby is different of course. I bought puppy pee pads but Koda ate the first three so I gave up straight away & toilet trained him outside, same as above tonnes of praise & treat if he went outside and ignored or occasionally told off if he went inside, at 4 mths he's completely toilet trained (fingers crossed now I've said that ! lol).

Re: Puppy pad training
Jed used to rip up the puppy pads and news paper to pieces so i just trained him to go outside, perseverance and remember mistakes do and will happen

Re: Puppy pad training
Sorry I have never used the training pads so don't really know, do you keep the pad in the same area in your home or move it around ? Maybe if it's in the same place he may prefer for it to be moved or vise verser ?

Re: Puppy pad training
My pup used them sometimes but mostly next to them on kitchen floor and she never pooped on them, now she has started chewing them so gonna start taking her outside.

Re: Puppy pad training
We started Bane off outside straight away, and left newspaper down over night. By about 14 weeks he learnt to jump at the door and jingle a keyring to let us know he wanted to go out too We used the same techniques mentioned above. Good luck!
