How much should I feed my new puppy?!
Hi, I've just got myself a new Staffy pup and I'm having some trouble trying to work out how much to feed him. I get the impression he would just keep going until I stopped putting food out!
He is 7wks old and 3.5kg. He was on dry food with the woman I got him from and so I kept him on the same but have just switched to some chicken and rice on advice of the vet since the switch in dry food brands was upsetting his stomach. I was using about 25g x 4 per day of the dry food. From what I have read I wonder if this is too little? And now I have switched to the chicken I have no idea how to gauge it!
Please help, any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jamie

Re: How much should I feed my new puppy?!
Are you feeding a different dry food brand to what your breeder was feeding?
I'm not sure on portion size for chicken and rice but you will be using it to settle his stomach, not as a long term food. So start with small portion sizes, maybe a third of a cup and see how he goes. If he seems hungry after a couple of hours give him another third of a cup and keep an eye on what comes out the other end! If he struggles to eat it, give him less the next time you feed him. Just start small, as too much can cause bloat which can be really painful and very dangerous for a puppy!
You will want to feed chicken and rice until his stools return to normal which is when you should start mixing in the dry food again bit by bit
Dry food will have an estimated amount to feed on the back of the box relevant to the weight of your puppy. Go by that and watch his weight. If he starts to look skinny, up his food a bit. Good luck with your new pup

Re: How much should I feed my new puppy?!
Thanks very much for the reply. Yeah the dry food I was using was different to the breeder and I realise this is what's upset him - despite the fact he couldn't wolf it down fast enough! I plan to start mixing it in again after his stomach has settled.
As for measures of the dry food I'm still not sure. For his age and expected size the pack lists 125-400g! This seems quite a big discrepancy to me. There is a fair bit of difference between giving him 125g a day or 400g a day!

Usually the 400g stated on the bag should be split up over 3 or 4 meals, so that hopefully makes more sense
What dry food will you be feeding?

Yeah I know to split it up but it says between 125-400! Which end of the scale do I go for?

Re: How much should I feed my new puppy?!
Hi
The recommendation is to feed 5-6% of the puppy's weight, i.e your dog is 3.5kg so 6% would be 210grams of food, split into 4 meals.
Hope that helps
