Re: sick of hearing about cruft
steve in the olden days when it was judged on the dog was great, got to know those long lest stalwarts of our breed gone sadly, good chin wags about the dogs and what ever was going on
these days it is bitchy cliquey and it depends on the owner/handler who gets it,
you will very rarely find a red winning which is a shame I have met some head turners in my time,
equally I could have puppies from some great lines, but just wanted babies and I have the best most gorgeous fur babies, after they came home we found out about their great grandad he was a star, I knew I recognised their dad from some where
btw I am not bragging about getting a pup from excellent heritage, let those who think they know what they are doing for them lol
Staffie licks and farts from the mob xx

Re: sick of hearing about cruft
Unfortunately Steve I think backyard breeding has done more to harm the breed than the elite. Be interesting to know though what percentage of owners actually buy for 'show potential'
Don't think the show itself should be banned, but it certainly needs looking at aspects of it. it seems more to be opening up to promote crossbreeds and rescues the real family pet dog with Scrufts and this superstar dogs thing, and the event is a great showcase for the Staffy display team along with the agility, flyball, canix events. What needs to be addressed is the governing bodies behind the pedigree side the kennel club etc world wide that's where the buck stops

Re: sick of hearing about cruft
i'm talking about top show dogs the last staffy winner was 30% inbred.... look at british bulldogs, king charles spaniel, pug
Re: sick of hearing about cruft
they banned mother and son father and daughters mating but after 6 years they still allow uncle & niece anuties and nephew mating remember they just dogs (thats what a top breeder said) in some zoo they will put down animal down so no inbreeding can bot happen of the advice from vets
Re: sick of hearing about cruft
i wonder COI we are i bet none are over 0.01% (some may be more) .. so why are top show dog over 1%? and some over silly amount like 30% at crufts? please dont tell me becasue they just dogs they meant to be part of the family members to us not show things!
Re: sick of hearing about cruft
As I said the pedigree side of things needs addressing but that's not the only event at the show there isn't the interest in just the best of breeds to give it airtime they have to have the exciting and dog next door stuff too and that's the positive I find. 2-3 years ago when Paul o'grady took that battersea Staffy around the agility that did wonders to highlight the breed and since then for the love of dogs show which has spun off from it has further done.
I don't know enough about breeding I have absolutely no interest in ever owning a kennel club registered breed (Ledger having his agility name registered and getting him formally measured for competition is ball ache enough) I will always go rescue. So if that whole side of the show went I wouldn't be bothered. But without it the things that I'm interested in and passionate about having the opportunity to see wouldn't get airtime.
You mention last years Staffy that dog should not be able to compete. when registered with the kennel club etc the family line should flag a warning and rule it out of competition and action should be taken against the breeder. But that has to be done at registration of the pups that is where the issue for me lies not with the show itself

Re: sick of hearing about cruft

Re: sick of hearing about cruft

Re: sick of hearing about cruft

Re: sick of hearing about cruft
Exactly it's the kennel club breed standards that need to be addressed. Us boycotting etc isn't going to make a shred of difference to such a large worldwide event which has all of those other the components. And massive company sponsorship
However it can be used as a platform to get information out while you have the attention of the audience. last year I remember there being short discussions about the health testing of the show dogs (think its on channel 4 this year so a channel that is maybe likely to have a documentary on the dark side of breeding). But it needs to be stopped at the breeding, boycotting the breeders, pushing for kennel club changes to breed standards. If everyone registered on this forum boycotted Crufts it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference the only way it would be impacted is if a major pet food supplier like Pedigree threatened to pull out on ethical grounds (never going to happen) or the broadcasters took a stand and threatened to pull the screening again another channel would just take it on.
I don't know enough about the percentages, how that is recorded, tested etc but an article highlighting the issues will be more impactive and read by more people during Crufts than if it was written in the middle of September. Use the event as a platform to get the information out when the wider audience will be most likely to pay attention.
