Food, and lots of it. Banes's recall is getting better each day, it tends to be even better if the treats are tasty. Let him smell them first, give them freely then while on lead bend and say come when he comes give lots of praise and a treat, then when he gets good let him off and keep doing it,
Ps. It only tends to work with tasty treats lol. I learnt the hard way lol

A long training lead, practise, practise, practise. The lead will give you confidence and still be in control while puppy can have a great time exploring and learning. A harness may be a better idea with the training lead so the neck is not put under too much strain.

Great advice from everyone, only thing I'll add is to "check in" at least 30 times on a walk initially.. This will train him to be focused on you and when you're going to give him a tasty treat. That can be lessened eventually, but Biscuit is 5 and I still get her to check in up to 10 times on a walk, she's always watching where I am now Smile also excited silly tones of voice.. You need to be more exciting than whatever else is around him.

My OH often forgets that recall is a command too, and just calls their name or says "come on" or "come here" where as I've trained the single word "come" as I would "sit" or "stay" and I've also recall trained on a whistle which has helped loads Smile

Ledger is venturing about a bit more off lead now and 'bye' is the trigger word for him to come back to me we also worked hard on 'stand' just for him to stop where he is and I want to work on an emergency down for when we venture further afield off lead just incase

Ah we do this with Biscuit too! She knows "wait" before going around corners (just in case there's a dog/person there!) and and "stay" where she automatically sits until we reach her and "heel" when I want her to stay close. She doesn't like lying down at the best of times indoor though, sod trying to get her to do it when it's cold/wet Laughing

Any tips for RECALL Empty Re: Any tips for RECALL

Post by Bane Tue Feb 18 2014, 14:05

We have been training recall with Bane for a couple of months now with the long lead and he has got a little better...not great though. It's sort of hit and miss as to whether he decides to come back, I just find the hardest thing is to get his attention, as in to look at me. Once he sees something even if i am standing in between him and the thing, or waving tasty treats in his face, or jumping up and down making silly noises, his eyes do not move.
Any further tips for getting their attention?

Thistle was exactly the same, and I did everything that has been suggested, then one day she just 'got it' I was quite surprised when she immediatley stopped playing with another dog and came back :-) she's 10 months old now.

We started with a training lead and treats with sasha, luckily she is easy to train especially if it concerns food lol. The practice does pay off sasha is 9 months old now and I would say that she has 90% recall now theres not much that distracts her now apart from birds, ducks or even ducks with bread lol xx

I'll tell you what really worked for me.. whenever I had Zeus off lead in a park and he went further than what I wanted him to.. instead of calling him and running after him, I ran away from him.

Soon enough, he realised to stay with me and not go too far.
