Renting
Afternoon!
Quick question, without going into too much detail, can't afford to buy a house, live in a small place and want to move so renting is probably our only option. Do any of you rent and if so, did you have problems finding somewhere that would accept dogs/Staffordshire Bull Terriers?
Breed of dog shouldn't matter but I have a horrible feeling it may sway some people into saying no and wondered if any of you struggled to find somewhere

Re: Renting
We live in a housing association property and had to gain written permission from landlord before we could adopt Rocky from a rescue centre.
Will you be renting privately ? if so then check out with the landlord if they allow pets or not, many don't.

Re: Renting
I'm with the council, I've never actually checked, but I'm sure they'd prefer a dog than a 9ft Burmese python which is what I used to have lol

Re: Renting
We rent! It's a bloody nightmare lol wish we could afford to buy!! Out of 6 houses we viewed only 2 would take dogs.. I always fib and says she's a terrier.. Don't have to say what type of terrier although one of the estate agents met biscuit and said they're prefer her breed to a long haired or overly slobbery breed! Our landlords live a 6 hour drive away, so never met us. They did state that all pets had to be friendly and of good temperament, so really don't want them to meet biscuit because she's a cow bag on first meetings!

Re: Renting
Yeah that's what I was afraid of, if I could I would buy but there's no chance of that in the near future and we're seriously out growing our flat, which I own a percentage on shared ownership at the moment.
I will rent privately but I'm dreading the knock backs because of Axl. I might take a leaf out of your book Rach and say he's a terrier, hopefully they won't ask too many questions! I need to get my arse in gear and start looking to be honest lol

Re: Renting
Flats are a nightmare! I lived in 3 in Bristol with Biscuit and the rent was more than I pay now for a 3 bed house! They only asked me breed and for a reference to state she's quiet, not destructive and clean (which I got from my previous landlord)
Ah but the looking part is exciting love house hunting! Unless you have a deadline.. Then it's just stress!

Re: Renting
Breed should not matter, its how well behaved they are in the house. I use to rent out a cottage, (we have since sold it) and we did put no dogs allowed because they did not have access to the garden ever though the canal was right in front of them, but we did make a few excepations for those who wanted it for long stay. All I asked was, is it well behaved in the house, e.g. does not chew floors, plasterboards or the furniture, and that it was housetrained. I wasnt bothered what kind. Good luck with it, and there is no harm in saying its a terrier, because its the truth really.

don't know what the problem is? i own 6 rental properties, and do allow dogs, and have had more problems with the human occupants than the canine ones.

Re: Renting
Hi Debs we live in private rented, we went and brought Gordon without asking the landlord (bit naughty) but a month ago we needed a gas check and he was coming round so we had to tell him. To be honest he was fine, saw he was in his crate when we were out and just asked us not to let him run around outside without his lead (which we don't) so I think you will be fine

Re: Renting
My parents own a flat which they use for weekend breaks and the conditions of the complex is that only one dog is allowed per flat and it must be microchipped
I considered renting out my house at one point and was always going to allow dogs and just have it written into the contract that a full carpet clean would be taken out of the deposit when they move on and any damage to be reported and repairs paid for can always be worth volunteering that kind of offer as a tenant

Re: Renting
i rent out a flat to a tenant who has a cat..initially i thought 'no' because a) i hate cats and the fact that they will kill the birds in the area
b) they are very destructive
I relented, because he is a single bloke with a mental condition, and we all need to someone to love. We put an amendment in the tenancy agreement giving him the okay, but the caveat being that the carpets must be cleaned and any damaged repaired before the termination of the tenancy.

That sounds fair enough to me

Re: Renting
I rent my landlord is fine with dogs. All I had to do was pay an extra amount on top of my original deposit they called it a "pet deposit"

Re: Renting
We rent but it was hard to find a house that allowed a larger breed. We also had to put down a one month rent for a pet deposit.

We rent and we asked permission to get Caley....although we decided if they did not let us we would move...we pay the rent on time and have been perfect tenants as far as they were concerned so they said no problem to having her. They never asked her breed either. Good Luck

Re: Renting
We have only rented pet free houses before, though the last flat we had, the people below us had a ratty little dog, made a hell of a noise day and night and as we were being shown around, the estate agents saw...few months down the line they were moved out so it's probably best to be honest about it!
If you can only find pet free places, you can always suggest some of the points above to the estate agents/landlords about carpet cleaning, extra deposit etc?

Re: Renting
We rent privately, but it took a long time to find a house that would even consider dogs, and this was before we had any dogs.
Found the one we are in now and had to pay an extra bond per dog, and had to get permission from the landlord before we got either of them. We did ask about getting a 3rd dog and she said no, hey ho, but at least we were allowed 2!
