Flo's toes Empty Flo's toes

Post by -Ian- Tue Feb 11 2014, 21:53

Bit of a query that i'm hoping you all might have some suggestions for.

In short, Flo chews her rear paw toe nails. In the summer she chews between the toes too. The first summer we had her one paw was really sore so a trip to the vets was in order. After a few tests and x rays etc the vet said it could be pain transference due to painful knee and suggested a bionic knee operation.

We didn't have insurance at the time but she is worth every penny and all seemed ok for a while. Towards the end of that summer she was at her rear paws again ! After more tests we were told that she is allergic to pollen (not great for a Dog that loves running in the flippin field !)

She was put on piriton and gradually the paws got a little better. Over the winter this year she has been fine.

She has just been caught with her paw down her throat so am thinking its piriton time again but seems way too early for grass pollen.

Anyone got any suggestions ?  Straight Face

I'm not sure? Daisy sometimes chews hers, I clean then with either salt water or water with a little apple cider vinegar in it then rub with coconut oil  Smile

I think cleaning her paws like Saz suggests after a walk will help.

We wash her feet after every walk but only with warm water.

It is odd though that it is both her rear ones and never the front. I did say she was special lol

Some good suggestions there and will definately try those.

Its usually just one of Daisy's front ones! Something must irritate it!

Not sure what was wrong with Bane's ears (allergy or yeast infection maybe?) But we washed it out with Apple Cider Vinegar as suggested on here and it cleared up in a day!
Parents staff also has some kind of pollen allergy and I will be taking some to him when I next visit to see if it helps his paws! He only chews the front ones Tongues He also scratches his ears, so much so that he got a fluid build up in one. The vet cut the end off and he no longer bothers with that ear but still itches the other one? They are strange.

Does sound like allergies.. Biscuit does this too.. I give supplements in her food and bathe her feet in Apple cider vinegar also when they're irritating her.. I used to give piriton to my kennel dogs a lot, but another vet has since told me that it only works on a small percentage of dogs?

Try giving the paws a good wipe down with clean water each time you come in from a walk, the coconut oil sounds like a great idea too.

Snoop used to chew his back paw and every so often you hear a little yelp. He had loads of problems with his ears and i had stuff from the vets for it. I wish i had joined the site a lot earlier and i would of tried the apple cider vinegar.
I noticed Lula does it sometimes but she also tries to bite her tail maybe it just her puppy stage but will keep an eye on it. I know its not from going out she not allowed out till next wed
