I've always wondered that myself too.
Had a quick look on the web, and found a site which states desirable height at WITHERS

http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/87

down the page a bit under "size"

Now just to work out how to keep my dog standing still long enough to measure.

Size
Desirable height at withers 36-41 cms (14 to 16 ins), these heights being related to the weights. Weight: dogs: 13-17 kgs (28-38 lbs); bitches 11-15.4 kgs.

from the kennel club website, weight - billy was 17.5kg last time he got weighed and he is not fat, not particular big, just normal and he is still a puppy. Is that weight right? Do your dogs weigh more than that,

Wow, Kita weighed around 14.8-15kg in her hey day and she's a small bitch. Sort of makes Izzy look like a giant, might have to get the tape measure out.

yep you measure the height from the withers to the ground Smile

Nowaday's chunkier type staffords find it hard pushed to stay below 17Kgs. My bitch is dinky at only 14 1/2 inches but she still weighs in at a solid 16.5 Kgs and she looks really small. My other little girl is very slightly built for a stafford (bone structure etc.) and measures 15.5 inches and weighes in at 17.5 Kgs.

Think nowadays if you whacked the winner's bench of a stafford class onto the scaled very few of them would weigh under 16 - 17Kgs

That's the thing, it's easy enough to bring a measuring rod into the ring, but not scales - that's just too much! So nobody's bothered if they're breeding staffs over the weight recommendations.

But they are only recommendations & not set in stone, just 'desirable'!

You measure to the top of the withers - ie the highest point of the shoulder.

No, the pic is right! The withers are the highest point of the dog's shoulder!

The vertical line shows how to measure height. The horizontal line shows how to measure length.

No, that's just where the lines cross! You take from floor to the highest point (withers) for the height & from brisket (most forward point of chest) to back of the thigh for length.
