Exasperated with Chloe
She's pulled ALL her stitches out of her paw - the vet says there's no point re-stitching as she'll only pull them out again. We have to keep it bandaged but either her or Lola pull the bandage off every hour. And the vets says no walks for at least 3 weeks. She cries like a baby when Lola goes out - I stay at home with her but she runs from door to door. It's heartbreaking. She goes spare if she has a 'bucket' on her head - crashing into walls, etc - so that's not an option. Lola ripped it straight off Chloe's head anyway, nearly taking her ears off with it!

Re: Exasperated with Chloe
Aw no Chloe! Would double socking it or layering something a bit more sturdy over the top make it more difficult for them to rip off the bandages?
I hope she recovers quick! It must be so sad watching her be so frustrated at not being allowed to go for a walk.

Re: Exasperated with Chloe
So sorry to hear that Jo. Our vet put a clip/staple in Rocky foot when it was cut open on some glass last year, it heals much quicker with the clip in, why not ask your vet if this is possible on Chloe's foot ?

Thanks Kathy - will definitely ask about that! He did say that the next option might be to cut the whole flap off - I prefer the staple idea.

I had exactly the same with Doug when he sliced paw, needed gen anaesthetic and stitches. Agree, it's heartbreaking, but, personally I felt it was right to be hard on him (ridiculous lampshade thing), staying in for a while, in order to achieve fastest possible return to fitness. He was miserable with his lampshade, yes. So was I! Poor boy. I don't have another dog, but if I did, I would keep them apart if their behaviour together was causing a problem while he's healing. I would query 3 weeks - can that be right? Seems terribly long if you can get the wound to close over, though I understand the point - to stop an infection setting in. Don't know about staples, surely worth checking that out. Good luck.....

Re: Exasperated with Chloe
Aw Poor Chloe.. We went through similar with Rolo and his dew claw, tried the Vapor rub on the bandage, tried anti chew deterrent too, strong leave, No... he hated the lampshade and would bury his head in the floor, he also damaged the skin on his neck (all healed now) in the end we went with lampshade and his cage, treats for going in his cage.. treats for putting his head in the cone, really hated doing it, but couldn't trust him to leave it alone. He came out the cage obviously every time someone was with him and the cone was off, but for 5 days we were really vigilant, he wasn't happy but he accepted it, I felt worse than he did I think. Hugs to Chloe

Re: Exasperated with Chloe
Aww they're bad to themselves aren't they! How is she today? The three weeks is a bit odd, Chico sliced the top of his paw nearly right of and got staples and they said small gentle walks and the same again when he sliced the pad on his paw. Seems like one thing after another lol

Re: Exasperated with Chloe
Poor Chloe. I got to agree too, 3 weeks is just stupid! When Pixee cut her back leg, back of ankle open, just above her paw, it was suppose to have a stitch in, but because she hates vets, and was so stressed out, they put a dressing on instead, I was told no walks for a week, and well I said, well, surely she can have on lead walks? ,they said yes as long as I kept the dressing dry, well the damn dressing came off after a hour, just slipped off. I wasnt happy, but what I did was keep her in but gave her short walks round the village, 5 to 10 mins ones, ok the wound did open abit but it soon healed, cos I kept it nice and dry, and well with it being Chloes paw, its harder naturally, but I agree too try the staple, and can you just dress her foot for walks only, but the min you home, just leave it off? And keep the walks short, but more often.?

Re: Exasperated with Chloe
Thank you so much everyone - really appreciate all your comments and help x I'm taking her to the vet's tomorrow to ask him if he can do anything else. We took her for a little walk yesterday cos it was so upsetting for her when Lola went out without her - we bandaged her paw lots, then put 2 bags on it, then more bandage round the top, but it was off after 20 mins, and she was SOOOOOOOOO enjoying her first walk after a week, looking right, left, right, left, her little head bobbing everywhere! she cried so much tonight when Lola went out for a walk that I ended up giving her both their teas plus treats plus cuddles plus treats, etc, etc!!!! Never cuddled an animal as much as I am at the moment

Re: Exasperated with Chloe
just an update - the vet said today that he'd prefer to cut the flap off her paw so she's back at the vet's tomorrow at 1000 and home by 1200 :-) he did say though 'unless she takes it off herself tonight' lovely vet - he said he thought we'd have to do this but wanted to give it the chance of knitting together first. got to get her a 'minky' boot apparently and then she can go for walks soon :-)

Re: Exasperated with Chloe
Hi Tara - we think she cut it on some glass - she was running through some long grass in the woods. Although we'll never know for sure.
Thanks Kathy - I walked straight out of pets at home with her (they're our vets too) in a bit of a daze and forgot to buy a boot. Will pop back later.
She's home and sleeping now
