Toilet Training Help!!!!
Hi all well as some of you know we have had a 13 week old staffie Star, now she is due her first injection on Monday, we only let her outside when we are carrying her, so we won't event let her go out back when our male Prince goes to do his business.
I want to know what is the best way to train her for wanting to go outside to do her business, we have got some puppy pads to help for now until vaccinations are all done, as don't want to tempt fate kind of thing. When she does her business we just take her to it and in a stern manner tell her no that is bad, we do not wipe her nose in it. Obviously if she used her pad etc she will be praised.
So just looking for some advise and tips to help us out guys as we haven't had to train a pup for the toilet we had Prince when he was 6 years old, I know different things work for different people and dogs, so any help will be really appreciated
Thanks all

Re: Toilet Training Help!!!!
I remember taking Tip out two to three times at night when she was a wee pup. And after she woke up from a nap, been fed, played etc. Best way is during the day every hour we would pop out to the garden and if she did anything we would praise her.

If Star does make a mess indoors just ignore it and clean it up don't make a big fuss about it. Use a non bio washing powder to clean the area as this will not leave any scent behind.
The times to watch for when she may want to toilet are: after eating, after drinking, after playing and when she wakes from a sleep. Keep a look out for her going to the door to ask to go out then just let her out.

Re: Toilet Training Help!!!!
We were told never to punish Bane or tell him off for having an accident as this could make him nervous or scared of going in the future, instead as Kathy says don't acknowledge it and just clean it up. Then when she goes in the correct place giver her lots of praise and maybe some treats.
We toilet trained Bane outside straight away so don't have any experience with the pads. I guess it's all the same kind of principle though. If shes sniffing and acting suspicious, or just hasn't gone in a while take her to the pad. A few minutes after shes eaten or drank some water, take her to the pad. After play time, take her to the pad etc. Whenever she goes, say something like "go wee" or "go toilet" or now my OH has changed it to "pop a squat" so that she starts to associate those words with going to the toilet. And again lots of praise and treats for going in the correct place
Maybe with the pads, try moving them closer to the door as she gets closer to being allowed outside. Then when she can go outside, move one of the pads out there so she can associate the pad with going to the toilet. From then out, always take her outside to the pad outside to toilet, rather than the pad inside
We haven't had an accident with Bane from about 12 weeks of age but we got him young and a few weeks ago he started jumping up at the back door when he wants to go out! We put a jangly keyring on the key in the door and jangled it whenever we took him out to the toilet. He's now cottoned onto the fact that if he jangles the keyring we will let him out! Yay!
Good luck! After being used to older dogs you forget how much hard work they are

Thank you all.
Well Star surprised us last night when we all went to bed we put a pad by the bedroom door for her, while we were getting sorted she started to sniff around and went on her pad YAY!!! so she was praised. In the morning when pete got up he saw she had ripped her pad up but we thought thats fine didnt tell her off, just cleaned it up and that was that but she had a wee and poo not
on it with it being ripped up never mind.
Anyway today she has again twice been on her pad for a wee, just need to get her to poo on there now

Re: Toilet Training Help!!!!
At least there is progress! Sometimes pooping can take longer! They must get shy! We used to have to stand and cheer Bane on in the garden! He'd even go back to the door to go back in, then eventually come back to the garden to go!

Re: Toilet Training Help!!!!
Hi again all
Well today has been a BIG step back in Star's toilet training, she an numerous times pooped and peed not on our mat She has either done it in the bedroom (thank god for laminate) or in the hall way near the front door (thank god for tiles). So i thought right i will move her training pad to the door, and i did then she decided to pee somewhere else in the hall way so moved it back to where it originally was and she goes back to the door again.
What can i do to help her???? I have tried the not acknowledging her or what she has done and just clean it up then clean the floors but doesn't seem to be doing much good all of a sudden. When she does use her pad she gets praised with good girl/big fuss/treat and she goes hypo cause she knows she has done right. Just can't understand the step back (one frustrated mummy)
Never known a pup poop and pee so much in a day
Please help guys

Re: Toilet Training Help!!!!
That's sad to hear! How often are you taking her to the pad to go toilet? And how carefully are you watching her when she's roaming around?
With Bane we literally took him out every half an hour. It's hard work constantly watching them but we found that's all we could do...when he started acting suspicious we took him out...how many rooms does she have access to in the house? Maybe you could try restricting her to only a couple of rooms until she starts to get it right?

Re: Toilet Training Help!!!!
She has access to the living room, hallway and bedroom we are in a ground floor flat I check on her everytime she goes quiet, I get suspicious lol. She follows Prince everywhere. So can't restrict her too much as not fair on Prince, I take her to her pad every half hour. Most the time whe she has an accident its not too far from her pad, I change it regular as noticed when she been 3-4 times on it she wont go on it again sometimes its less times than that.
Today has been a little better, she has used her pad and only had the 1 accident, another thing is now everytime Prince goes out she wants to go with him, so I have to pick her up and take her so she knows where he is and what he is doing amd when I do I say wee wee's, cnt let her down yet not until a week after her 2nd jab, and I can't wait. So she seems to be learning from Prince aswell
Fingers crossed were slowly getting somewhere with her now

Re: Toilet Training Help!!!!
It might just take her some time then...have you not got a small enclosed garden area where Prince goes? It's frustrating having to wait so long to take them out! Especially when they start to become more interested in outside

Re: Toilet Training Help!!!!
No our back garden is the drive and lil bit of grass to one side, Prince tends to go either at right at the back by my car or on the grass, but if its raining its out the door to the fence and does a wee there lol. She is doing well though and getting the hang of when she doesn't go on her pad she doesn't get fussed etc but when she does she gets praised .
She will get there in time
