After op care
My girls just had a lump removed from her leg and is very sore The vet has given me some medicine but she can only have it once a day. She's crying a lot right now and I wondered if there was anything I could do to help her?

Re: After op care
ah poor little girl.
Those long stitches are just begging to be tugged at or licked, especially when the wound starts healing and they'll start itching, so although she'll hate it, please do put some sort of collar on her 24/7to prevent her doing this.
If she's crying with pain please do phone your vet and ask if there is anything more you can give her to ease the discomfort.
Wishing good luck to you both; please do keep us updated.

Re: After op care
I would also advize you to contact the vet again, that wound looks quite red and angry still.

Re: After op care
when my sam and xena had huge op well xena was worse she cried all night me and my mum stay up with her it was so sad to hate her
Re: After op care
She was not very well at all last night, she had uncontrollable diarrhoea and just cried so much. We had her straight to the vet first thing and it was a different one from yesterday. She was shocked at the state of her
They gave her 4 injections, morphine, antibiotic, something to settle her tummy and a vitamin injection. Also sent me home with some morphine to take at home and antibiotic. She told me to syringe water to her if she won't drink but luckily she's still drinking and has tried a bit of cooked chicken breast today.
The morphine is helping her with pain so she's not crying anymore and another good side effect is she's a lot calmer on it so she's not jumping about like a plonker!
She wouldn't tolerate the collar and it was rubbing the top of her wound, the vet told us to put a t-shirt on her and keep a close eye on her. So far she's kept it on!
I will be keeping a very close eye on her this weekend, poor baby girl

Re: After op care
Like humans, some dogs react worse to anaesthetics and/or wounds than others. No bad reflection on "bravery" or "low pain thresholds" or anything, it's just how some of us are. I'm so glad to hear that Mimi has been given a full range of help.
The t-shirt is a brilliant idea! And it's good to know that it is helping - at all costs Mimi must not bite, chew or lick at those stitches. As Kathy says, the wound does look a bit inflamed, but the anti-biotics should settle that - do keep a check on it every 4 hours or so though (don't wake her in the night though) . It is important that clean fresh air is allowed circulate around the wound so the T-shirt should be of single-knit cotton (not nylon) and not fit tightly, and change it for a freshly washed (boiled if possible - no washing powder) T-shirt if it gets soiled in any way.
Sod's law being what it is this is happening over the weekend when our vets go off to play golf!
I feel sure that Mimi will improve over the weekend; but it will be an anxious time for you I'm sure.
Do keep us updated, we all wish you and Mimi all the very best for a speedy recovery.

Re: After op care
Oh no, she's licking at it through her tops now :/ tried her with a buster collar and she went nuts and had the thing in pieces in seconds! Even tried cable ties and she still got it off!!
I think we'll just have to keep changing her shirt and distracting her, can't stop her licking at night though daft dog

Re: After op care
Oh dear, poor Mimi. It's natural for dogs to lick at wounds and to tug and bite at stitches that are pulling/itching (as they will as the wound heals), but nature doesn't always know best and it is important that Mimi doesn't interfere with the wound in any way.
Hayley's idea of 2 or 3 t-shirts is a good one, but I would also suggest trying (much though she might hate it) a soft collar to prevent rubbing against the wound, and a basic plastic cone above that to prevent her from reaching the wound.
The wound must be kept as clean and dry and aerated as possible - in the good old days we had sulphalinamide powder to puff onto wounds and imho nothing could beat it for drying up the wound and preventing infection.
I wish you and Mimi all the best for a speedy recovery - do please contact your vet on Monday if the wound becomes more inflamed/wet.

Re: After op care
Are you able to get hold of some DAP spray it maybe an idea to spray some in her bed for her, this should help to calm her too just leave it for 10 minutes before she gets in contact with bedding though.
