Ty's off the lead antics
We are having some problems with our 4 month puppy Ty. We take him for two walks a day combining on the lead walking to the park/ oval followed by off the lead walks around the oval where we let him run and sniff around etc. Our problem occurs when we get back to the footpath to put him back on the lead. If he is near us he will sit on command and allow us to clip him back on but if he's out of arms reach he sometimes decides to stat trotting off down the path. Telling him to stop or sit does not work, and if I use a sterner voice it makes him run more, it get's to the point where Jenna and I have to either catch him or draw him back with treats.
Any ideas on what could be making him do this and what changes we can make to help ?, our main fear is him running in front of a car or running off completely. We have taught him how to sit , shake paw and lay down and he will sit at each road crossing when he's on the lead so is normally pretty good.

Seems you need to do some recall training, maybe with a long training lead

Yes invest in a long training line, the UK we can get them from ebay very cheap (hopefully you can over there too)

Thanks for the help , we are enrolling in obedience classes next month so this will give us something to work on until then.
Re: Ty's off the lead antics
What we did we thought Debo stop, sit and wait. We practiced it somewhere quite. He had to knew his stay and sit. So we took his lead off and when he was few steps away we would call " Debo stop" in a happy voice. He reacted on his name and straight away when he looked at me would add sit and stay. Walked towards him, gave treats and let him run. When he got it, the distance got longer. Now we got to the point when he spot a dog he would sit, then I would give him command stay from a distance and come closer to put the lead on.

Re: Ty's off the lead antics
With my two I would run the other way and when they followed me they got a reward but only do this where you know they can't reach a road. Looks funny but does work

Re: Ty's off the lead antics
Sounds like he is pushing his luck a bit too, I would also recommend a long training lead, try amazon I'm sure they would have them too

Re: Ty's off the lead antics
First thing Tip got taught was her name and "come". Her recall isn't 100% (especially if there are guinea fowl or partridges in the road) so we keep her on leash till we reach our property and then she gets to play off lead in the field next to our house.
I agree that a long leash is a great help.

Re: Ty's off the lead antics
Cheers for the replies everyone. He's responding well now when it comes to walking off the lead. We invested in a retractable long lead which helps immensely. Also discovered that's he's a lot smarter than he looks haha, he know's that if he comes when called he will get a treat so he got into the habit of running off in front of us then waiting for us to call him back. Gazagem, I was doing the same thing with Ty, everytime he ran off I would call him back turn around and walk the other direction
Puppy obedience classes start next month which I think both Ty, Jenna and myself will love and hopefully we will get some useful info out of
