Re: playful nipping
Darcy mouthes when she plays (soft biting) and we allow it but sometimes with excitement she forgets herself and goes a little rough a firm 'enough' from us and she stops straight away. Have a read through this Laura, he may never have been thought bite inhabition http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/stop_your_staffy_puppy_biting you can always replace whatever he's biting with something he's allowed to bite (a toy) he'll soon learn what's allowed and what's not

Re: playful nipping
I think a good way of teaching them not to nip is to say "No" and then turn away completely, all play & interraction stops & no eye contact. After a few repeats they start to realise that nipping stops their fun & they don't do it so much. Eventually it stops altogether.
It's a totally normal & natural behaviour with dogs, but we just need to teach them that it isn't acceptable with humans!
