Starting to give up Empty Starting to give up

Post by Beckyferg90 Wed Dec 11 2013, 22:42

I own a 8 month old staffy boy called Rio. He is amazing on a morning! But if I go to work on a afternoon and my husband looks after him and I come back! He starts to growl and bark at me! And also showing his teeth and snapping! It gets me upset a lot and worried about his behaviour! After 20 mins he calms down and wants cuddles or plays with his toys! I really need some help please I'm really struggling Sad

I would guess that he just gets over-excited at seeing you again.  He's still very young, and youngsters very often growl and bark in excitement - it's not aggressive at all.  An aggressive growl will generally be accompanied with a curled-up upper lip, ears laid back and a hard fixed stare - a playful growl will be accompanied by pricked ears and a lively expression in the eyes.  An aggressive bark will involve a stiff-legged, stiff-bodied stance, maybe initially standing off to assess the situation; a playful bark will have a relaxed body and lots of bouncing and play-bowing.  Puppies will often jump up and "snap" with their teeth when excited; all this will diminish with age, experience and  training.

Do explore around our site for tutorials, especially in the New Owners section for puppies (as listed by Steve above)- and don't despair!  We're always here if you want to talk.

He may be telling you off for going but you have to stay consistent and firm, ignore this behaviour, and does he get a good walk whilst you are out? Keep at it and don't despair  Smile

Can you try to find out what is going on while you are out ? It sounds like your husband maybe playing a bit rough with him and Rio is just wanting to carry on like this with you.
