Lead or harness
Hi there all, Zara is 12 weeks old and I have been using a collar and lead for her walking. Although today I tried her on her harness that I use for the car. I felt more comfortable using this although I've been told it's best to train them with a collar and lead. Any advise or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Zara walks quite well. Although when she she another dog person bike anything that moves basically she really pulls to reach them. I have been teaching her to sit and wait to see if her friendliness is wanted by the on comers. Is this the right way to go or should I teach her to walk straight pass.

Re: Lead or harness
I think you're doing exactly the right thing!
I prefer a collar because I like to have full control of the sharp, pointy white things called teeth!
But many people prefer a harness. It really depends what you're comfortable with.

I prefer a harness because I feel like I have more control. Daisy can be skittish at times and I would worry that a collar would slip off. Go with what you feel happiest with

Re: Lead or harness
As long as you remember that in the UK a dog must have a properly fitted collar with an ID tag in public places.

Re: Lead or harness
Thanks for replies. Yes Zara has her collar with id tag. She wears that all the time. Will persevere with the collar and lead I think. I did notice the difference with the freedom she has at front end with harness. Even though I felt more in control. Hope that makes sense

Re: Lead or harness
I used a harness when I first rescued Moo, more for the fact that my mum walked her and she felt she had more control, I just use a lead now but she is generally off it anyway, do what feels comfortable for you X

Collar here though sometimes I do use harness aswell, especially if going anywhere where there are lots of dogs and people, as Vin does get very excitable

Re: Lead or harness
We use a harness and a collar, the harness is used in the car then sometimes on collar and sometimes on harness for walks, depends where we are.

Re: Lead or harness
Here is Zara on a walk. Still persevering with lead. Some days are better than others. She's getting there though. I find it harder on her more excitable days . Never a dull moment with Zara

Re: Lead or harness
Both me and the other half have different preferences , I walk ziggy with a lead and collar as he reponds to me more that way I feel and doesn't pull me as much , the other half prefers the use the harness but as she's short ziggy tends to pull more .
Practise with both I would say and see which you like and which you feel as better control , and also see how she responds to both

Re: Lead or harness
Hi all. Just a little update. I've gone back to using the harness. I find it easier for me. My husband still uses the lead. Her walking gets better everyday. Next step is some off lead time. Going to find a large safe area for her. I met a really nice guy walking his dog today and he told me about a place I could take her that's enclosed. Can't wait

Re: Lead or harness
Zara had her first off lead experience today. She loved it. She was really good. Although we did have to put her back on lead once another dog arrived as she just got too excitable and was nearly hanging off the poor spaniels ears. They did have a little nice play together though.

Re: Lead or harness
We use a harness most of the time with sasha but she will walk using a collar too. I dont think she cares as long as she gets to go out lol x

Re: Lead or harness
Yep definitely harnesses here - they walk better, you have more control, and they pull less. Also the harnesses are what we use to anchor them with in the car. I wouldn't want a dog anchored by its neck.......Ellieandskye wrote:Harness all the way
