I bloody don't believe it....
her back claw is literally just healing, she was limping again on her front legs today, I thought cold weather/arthritis but no, she has split one of her front claws

Re: I bloody don't believe it....
Ohh no Moo! poor girl! One of the dogs at our work kept hurting her dew claws so we had them removed since they were all floppy, they kinda looked like they weren't connected but they would bleed if she hurt them, however, they kept getting caught/ripped out ALL the time so we made the decision to have them off! Not sure if it's Moo's dew claws but that's always an option, don't think the operation costs too much either!
Hope you sort it soon

Re: I bloody don't believe it....
Cheers Cody but it isn't her dew (although I have considered having them removed as she has split them 3 times) this is just her normal claw!

Moo, what on earth are you doing to your claws!
Can you paint them with anything to make them a bit stronger?

TBH it was a good suggestion but I don't think it would help, I was wondering if there was a supplement for claws?

Aww, poor Moo!
Have you tried giving her unflavoured gelatin? It's supposed to be good for claws.

Re: I bloody don't believe it....
It's the stuff that they put into jelly, gummy bears, haribo, etc., to make them gummy! The unflavoured stuff can be bought at most supermarkets and health stores for humans to strengthen nails, but it can be used for dogs as well.

Re: I bloody don't believe it....
Blimey Moo! That's insane Janey! Hmm I just googled it and I've seen a lot of people saying that fish oil is the best and the cheapest way to improve nail health! It's said that you should feed things high in proteins as that enhances the make up of the nail! Lots of groomers have also said that instead of clipping nails you should keep them short by using a dremel as it grinds the nails down to stop them from being caught and keeps the nails thick and dense at the end to stop them from splitting as well as keeping the structure of the nail inside whole instead of breaking the molecules inside which would prevent them from breaking and being weak/brittle? Not sure if any of that will help but good luck in finding something that works for you both!

Re: I bloody don't believe it....
Oh dear not again poor Moo
The gelatine is a very good idea as this will strengthen the nails and make them less prone to splitting. When I was a kid my Mum used to give me a cube of raw fruit flavour jelly to help my finger nails as they always used to split, the jelly helped though.

Poor Moo. My Grandma used to say a cube of jelly would work to strengthen nails. You can't go wrong with fish oils either.

Re: I bloody don't believe it....
I feel for you because Ozzie is recovering from a split back claw at the moment. He's going stir crazy without his normal daily exercise. Not sure how he did it either. We got back from his walk Friday evening and he was bleeding everywhere. I could only put it down to over-enthusiastic braking when chasing his ball.
Does anyone know if pigment in claws affects their strength? Oz is the first dog I've owned with white claws and as far as I remember, none of my previous dogs ever split a claw.

Re: I bloody don't believe it....
No and no, I think she may have an infection or broken it, its the only thing I can think it can be as it has come on so quickly and she really yelps when you touch it. You no what there pain thresholds like and hers is shuge, and she can't walk on it, thank god a friend has a car cause otherwise I wouldn't be able to get her to the vets, oh how I love being stuck indoors on my day off! So frustrating....

Re: I bloody don't believe it....
Sorry net was playing up last nite.......Caryll wrote:Why do they want to x ray?
I know right very extreme, they wanted me to take her in today as the claw that is infected may need removing which they would have to do under anesthetic and at the same time do an x ray! I said absolutely not and that I would try her on the anti biotics first and see how we go from there. I hadn't seen this vet before and hope not to again. Thankfully she is slightly better today, still limping but awake, so I think after a few days she will be right as rain.
Kinda angry that they suggested x ray because if I didn't know what I was doing I would have probably gone with the advice from the vets!

Yes its just infected, badly enough for me to worry but to have it taken out straight away.............as I said rather annoyed as someone who didn't know what they doing would have gone on the vets advice!
