Confused by to much information
Lola has had a skin condition for approx. 8 weeks now which has progressively got worse constantly scratching biting and licking her sides and front and rear legs. Needless to say she has got some fur loss now. Visited vets on numerous occasions and shes had two lots of antibiotics and one lot of cortisone, while on last antibiotics and cortisone things did settle down, but after being off these for as few days scratching started again worse than before. Back to vet yesterday and he has prescribed a liquid that I put in Lolas food (unfortunately I don't know what is Called) everyday for 2 months as he is treating it as demodex mites. I have asked about skin scrape but he seems reluctant to carry this out (maybe because shes young) I have read numerous sites on the internet and I am convinced my self that it is demodex and I have bought a shampoo called dermopt to help as well. But I just don't know what to think should I insist for a skin scrape or should I give this medication time

Re: Confused by to much information
I would definitely insist on a skin scrape, and if the vet is reluctant to give it a go, I would consult with another vet, my Rocky had Demodex and has only just been given the all clear, the symptoms you are describing are quite similar, but always best to be sure with a positive skin scrape, so the vet can prescribe the correct medication to get it under control and get rid of the mites
I hope lola is okay!

That's a bit strange isn't it Skin scrapes for demodex are painless, take seconds, and you get the result there and then so why is the vet reluctant to do one? Tbh I'd think of getting a second opinion. Your vet is treating Lola with drugs she may not need! Is there another vet you could use?

Re: Confused by to much information
There is another vet we are on our second vet as the previous one was trying to string things out, telling me that it could be something I was using at home whilst this was getting worse so I left them and went to this new one. I am so confused and a little angry as I just want the best for lola

Re: Confused by to much information
I completely understand where you are coming from, our first vet was stringing us along too, and we eventually left, but I really would get a second opinion, especially if your vet won't do the skin scrape, as Hayley said, it is virtually painless, and takes seconds. It really needs to be diagnosed to be treated properly and effectively.
As puppies their immune system is very low, and mostly they contract the mites from their mum as pups. The vet prescribed us Ivermectin, which Is given orally, and weekly washes with a prescribed shampoo, and it cleared up very quickly.
Please let us know how you get on

Re: Confused by to much information
Bobby is exactly the same. Scratches and bites all the time. Hes been to the vet twice now. Hes red raw underneath. Hes had a steroid injection and anti biotics and our last visit they did a skin scrape and despite it coming back clear they have given me treatment (back of the neck) and treating it still as if its demodex. No signs of any improvements for Bobby yet. I wonder if it is an allergy but piriton doesn't help him either.
Fingers crossed you get it sorted. Its horrible. You feel helpless!

Re: Confused by to much information
Could it be colour dilution alopecia? With her being blue - that is the first thing that came to mind...
