Dog sleeping outside
Does you dog sleep outside? If so how do you get them to sleep in kennel? My renny is largely an outside dog and most nights doesn't whine to sleep inside. If he does then he comes in. But when he does sleep outside he sleeps under the house not in his lovely comfy kennel.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
I have put treats in there and my son has sat in there trying to get him to know it's ok.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
yep and you will find 99% on this forum has their dogs sleep inside with them, as Staffies really aren't the breed of dog to leave outside. So they won't agree with it, unless you have a insulated and heated kennel

Re: Dog sleeping outside
Insulated and heated? I live in australia and the dog would die from heat if I had that. In the middle of winter yeah he does sleep inside. Renny chooses to e outside. I have a little house and a massive yard it's huge, he is a dog and does what does like to do run, play roll around, look for mischief. There would be something wrong with him if he didn't love it out there.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
might help if you mentioned that, this is a predominantly UK forum so yes we need insulated and heated kennels here.
Just because he's a dog doesn't mean he needs to love sleeping outside

Re: Dog sleeping outside
Unlike the owners here who are mainly from the UK where it is A LOT colder than Australia, I'm originally from Aus and even when we lived in NSW, VIC and WA with our dogs, they always slept indoors in the evenings regardless of the weather or season so I really don't have any suggestions on how to make your dogs sleep in kennel as we've never kept one outdoors in all the years we've owned dogs.AllOfUS wrote:Insulated and heated? Our main reason was for their safety and never once contemplated leaving them outside to sleep. The other big reason is that they are also part of the family and we would never be comfortable to leaving them outdoors. Maybe just leave the outdoor kennel for during the day and when he's outside to go hangout. I think the fact that he sleeps under the house maybe means that his kennel isn't that as comfortable as you think it is and he'd rather being inside the house with the rest of the family

Re: Dog sleeping outside
I echo the above. I also live in a very hot country and would never contemplate letting them sleep outside, for safety reasons, the fact they're part of the family and it's just so much more comfy and cooler inside. They do have kennels that they will go to chill out during the day in if they want some time out.

At the end of the day I didn't ask for wether or not people believe what I am doing with my dog is what they would do. I sit well with my decision for my dog you feel free to do what you feel with yours. If there is anyone who can help me please comment. I mostly read comments and don't put too much input, I don't agree with everything I read but that doesn't mean the poster is wrong just as I'm not.

We're a friendly forum & will chat about things. Would you rather nobody had bothered to answer your thread at all?
At the end of the day, most Stafford owners see the breed as a sociable one, and so their dogs share their home both day and night. Personally I don't think staffords do as well in kennels as they do in the house, so my only advice would be to spend more time I retracting with your dig rather than letting him go wild outside.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
I have children and I have come to find just like children when you have a dog everyone has their opinion and think their opinion is God, and if you don't go along than you are a bad mother. I am secure enough in myself to not need to go along with the group. I didn't ask if him sleeping outside was acceptable. He is not going wild he is living his life lol. I should go and get him and my children out of that fresh air and sunlight! Must be doing them a world of harm.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
I don't think any one has meant it to come across in a way of what is acceptable or not, just stating their personal view is that's all
I am from Sydney, and Rocky sleeps inside with me, he has his own bed, and stays in it for the night, except for during the day if I'm out he has a bed outside as well as a kennel, and he sleeps in both, whichever he prefers!!
Sometimes it takes a little more to get them used to something, in regards to his kennel, put some of his toys and treats in there, and keep luring him in with the treats, it will need to be consistent training, and try get everyone to give it go, he might just warm up to the idea

Re: Dog sleeping outside
I live in England so haven't ever used an outdoor kennel before, but could you follow a similar pattern as you would with crate training? Time spent in the kennel little and often, and always with nice kongs, chews and treats.. Snugly bedding etc? As long as it's made a positive place hopefully it will become his outdoor den and safe place that he goes to for rest. I guess the main thing is to take it slow, as long as it's always a fun place I'm sure he'll learn to love it I'm on my phone but I think there's a link to crate training advice on the forum.. If not can send you my training plan that I send home with adopters when I get to a computer

Re: Dog sleeping outside
My dogs sleep inside in their crates, I wouldn't want them to sleep outside, I couldn't sleep myself if I knew they were sleeping outside! However if Renny prefers to sleep under the house rather than his kennel I would let him.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
Could you not just bulid or adadpt his kennel to fit in a spot where he already likes to sleep, i.e under your house. Our dog sleeps indoors at the bottom of the stairs in his cage but in the summer he will happily spend most of his time in the garden .

Re: Dog sleeping outside
If you can't get him to sleep in the kennel and he prefers under the house he obviously doesn't like his kennel. Staffys love human contact, keep him indoors where he will be a happier dog.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
Im in Australia & Jabba sleeps outside in his kennel or stretcher bed, he loves it, i tell him its time for bed & he runs outside & hops in/on his bed.
The temp where i live ranges from -2 in winter to 40 in summer & most summer nights its cooler outside than inside. He has plenty of blankets in winter & he never complains

Re: Dog sleeping outside
maybe it's familiar sounds and smells .. (i.e. house and his human 'family' ) .. and/or more air circulation ..But when he does sleep outside he sleeps under the house not in his lovely comfy kennel.
.. he sees it as a very large den .. it has many escape routes .. etc etc ..

i was born in Sydney .. spent teenage years there ..
'n had many family holidays on friends cattle and sheep farms

Re: Dog sleeping outside
Our boy spends most the day outside when we in work and has insulated kingspan kennel as its gets bit colder here than in oz ha, he loves it, runs out every morning and waits for us as gate of the pen , usually gets fed there every morning so this has probably helped encourage him, but he has always lived outside during the day and is in during the night maybe try afew treats in his kennel

Re: Dog sleeping outside
Put your clothes in the kennel and the smell will make it happier.Maybe a blanket. Also another dog for company and to cuddle into for body heat. That is my suggestion
I had 2 Rotties who had to live in a kennel as they would pant and sweat in the kitchen when the heating went on in winter. Some dogs need to live out doors. Some prefer the house.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
We live in Adelaide and Bella has been sleeping outside in her Kennel since we brought her home at 8 weeks. She does very well with it but I think it is because it is what she has done from birth even with her litter. Her kennel is one that is long width ways and had the opening at one side and it covered with plastic sleeves to keep the cold and the bugs out. This makes her feel safe and secure. We also have plenty of soft snuggly bedding in there too with a thermal dog bed (which means it takes her warmth and turns it into more warmth without any electrical cords). She has a raised dog bed for Summer time sleeping as it can get stinking hot here in Aus as you know.
I would get some of your unwashed clothes and put them in the kennel and make sure the bedding is really soft and comfy. If your dog is whining to come inside, DO NOT reinforce the behaviour by letting her in! You need to stick to the boundaries that you set in place - this will make for a more secure dog. They must come inside when YOU say so. Have a small radio somewhere near her kennel at nights to comfort her until she is used of life outside at night. If she is happy in her place under the house - let her be.
People on this forum are correct when they say that our dogs are like part of the family and should be inside - life outside for a dog 24/7 is not the way to go with this breed. Your dog may not like to sleep outside - they are all different - and you may have to make a decision to have her inside or out. Either way when you make your decision stick to it and be consistent. Our situation works for us as Bella sleeps outside only at night and is straight back inside when we are awake. This was a personal choice for us as we have two young children and required quite a lot of discipline from Bella (and the kids) and Bella has turned into a very well behaved member of the house who knows her place and is very happy.
Good luck

Re: Dog sleeping outside
The best thing to do is when your staffordshire bull terrier is whining to come in, is to just try and ignore it.
and eventually he/she will just get the idea that he/she will have to sleep outside. One of my staff's was whining but all I did was ignore him and he got the idea after about a week. the best way is to be the BOSS!.

Re: Dog sleeping outside
do any research into the breed and you'll soon discover that they are not happy to be kept outdoors, and in particular do not like to be separated from their family as it causes enormous amounts of anxiety. personally, i'd never do it and cant see any benefits.
