Re: Whats your views on this dogs condition????
absolutely gorgeous
Actually he/she isn't overly conditioned so this could easily be kept up with diet and exercise, but they tend to allow abit more weight when not showing the dog. Me and the boys are slowly working on conditioning to a point and not to this degree.
FYI to get a dog to a condition like this they are fed a LOT of food, it is not a case of little food and lots of exercise, they eat a lot more then a typical pet dog

no hun
Basically they are fed a good diet but a LOT of it, and then strict exercise routine, which normally involves lots of walking and running about, but also things like spring pole, swimming, weight pulling etc etc
Also it's something that needs reading into, and waiting until the dog is old enough as to not harm them physically, normally 3 years + is recommended

It's unnatural, whatever breed it is.
It's like Arnold Schwarteneggar (sp?) at the height of his Mr Universe days. It's not healthy, neither is it 'typical' of a fit & healthy dog.

Also with the winter upon us surely they need a certain amount of body weight to keep warm! Also there must be a lot of wear and tear which could result in mobility problems later on in life! It's like people who do a lot of sport, they pay for it later in life! Ask my OH

That was your choice Ella, the dog in the pic didn't have a choice. I couldn't do something to Mia knowing she would probably suffer for it later on in life.

Have you not seen some competitive agility or similar dogs, they are very very fit dogs, and some to this ^^^ sort of condition and yet no one moans about their health. It's still a hell of a lot of exercise those dogs do.

I wish more people would spend time taking the effort to get their dogs in condition - you sadly see dogs that are overweight all the time and that is my biggest peeve!
I prefer to see dogs like this than over weight.

Re: Whats your views on this dogs condition????
I would prefer to see a healthy, fit dog - neither fat nor ripped.
Ripped is just as bad as fat! It's a strain on the heart, muscles & tendons, just as it is on body buildermen.
I'm afraid with a lot of owners of ripped dogs, it's an extension of their (ahem) egos.

Re: Whats your views on this dogs condition????
According to my personal version of the dog management manual, the function of the owner is to:
a) give the dog a good life in the here and now
b) give the dog every chance of a happy and healthy life in the future.
Considering all that dogs give back to us, I dont think there should be any compromise on the above. We dont actually know whether the pictured dog's condition is chemically-induced or ripped or whatever. However, it does look damn weird and possibly indicative of a dog not having a good life (either now or later).

Re: Whats your views on this dogs condition????
Not sure this is right as my dog loves nothing better than to chase after balls/flirt poles or anything for that matter. I have to restrict his exercise or he would just continue till he dropped. You can see all my dogs ribs and he too is very muscley but not to the extent of this dog in the pics, which I think looks slightly worse because she`s straining on the leash. I much prefer to see a lean dog, in general I see far more tubby staffy`s than lean one`s . They are after all supposed to look lean and athletic.yeahbut wrote:However, it does look damn weird and possibly indicative of a dog not having a good life (either now or later).

Wingo was in not far off this condition recently - she went from thin to very lean.
I've since fattened her up just a touch but both her and my other dog, Weemsy, are in quite lean condition.

Lean is great, but the dog in the photo has had every ounce of fat stripped from its body and is built like mr Universe. That's just not natural or healthy. Where in the wild do you see any animal look like that?

No your right but also where in the wild do you find such vast variations of the same animal . Thus comparing our pooches to wild animals is not really a good analogy.

Amazing!
I totally agree though that is not natural! There isn't an ounce of fat on Moo, she is lean and well built, has a lovely waistline, no need to go to extremes though, it is not good in the long run......

It isn't the same. Yes, there are many, many breeds and they're all very different, but they're still dogs. Wild dogs, feral dogs, pet dogs. The only ones that look like that have been made that way by human intervention - it doesn't happen in the wild, and wild predator animals are (by and large) supremely fit!paul l wrote:No your right but also where in the wild do you find such vast variations of the same animal . Dingo

Neither are 'ripped', just lean and fit.

Re: Whats your views on this dogs condition????
Yes I know that Caryll I was just being facetious. My point though was dogs are how they are because of human intervention maybe this one has in your view too much intervention. The opposite end of the scale would be the british bulldog which would be generally nowhere near as "healthy" as this dog. As I said I prefer leaner looking dogs though this dog does look extreme but I still think it looks better and healthier than a lot of the Staffy`s I see waddling along. Our dog is lean but not like this dog . Ive seen a few working dogs terriers and lurchers looking this lean and always think they look super fit. We all have our views and its rare we could all agree the same view point.Caryll wrote:It isn't the same. Yes, there are many, many breeds and they're all very different, but they're still dogs. You're missing the point, Paul. There's no point talking about the Bulldog - it has nothing to do with this case.paul l wrote:Yes I know that Caryll I was just being facetious. Humans have created specific breeds, but they're all still dogs. Any dog 'conditioned' to that extent is actually far more prone to health problems in the long run than a slightly overweight dog (note slightly overweight, not obese). People who condition a dog to this extent do so not for the good of their dog's health, but to extend their own inadequate egos.

Hi Caryll no I get the point and agree this dog is maybe too lean as I originally said. I think it looks worse as its straining on the lead but even if it was`nt so conditioned I think it would still be a slim built dog .Caryll wrote:You're missing the point, Paul.

It isn't the leanness that bothers me - it's the over conditioning, like a body builder. Totally unnatural & unhealthy in the long run.

Just as in bodybuilding, staying in this condition is not healthy long term.
