Bringing a new pup home
Hi there guys,
Let me start off by saying that this website has helped me so much in becoming a responsible dog owner, My name is Dylan I'm 20 years old and I come from South Africa. When I first moved out of my moms house I was looking 2 buy a dog of my own and I did a lot of research on many breeds, then a friend of mine introduced me to his staffy and I fell inlove with them! I have a male staffy named Caesar and he is 11 months old now:) he loves playing and he has a lovely nature I have never had problems with him bitting another dog or getting aggresive.. But he has a very dominating personality and he has 2 be the top dog haha.. 2 weeks ago I got a female staffy named Iris and she is about 10 weeks old now.. The 2 dogs get on very well now the play together, sleep ontop of each other and sometimes I find Caesar licking and cleaning the puppy.. I was very suprized to see them get on so well at first, because of Caeser's dominating attitude. Will this friendship between the dogs stay like that or will Caeser try dominat her as she gets older?
Any advice would be much appriciated
Thank you

Re: Bringing a new pup home
It will more than likely stay as it is as it sounds like they are bonding really well.
I got Laska when Marley was at about the same age as your Caeser and although there have been some spats they are insepearble.
there will be some ups and downs as they will both be going through the life stages of puppy hood together.
Marley can be very dominant to other dogs by posturing but lets Laska get away with murder in the house, if she wants the toy he will let her take it and then sit whining about it. And when it comes to play fighting she will mostley be on top bashing him about until he has had enough. he will then turn the tables just to let her know and then trot off or go to sleep.
Overall he has stayed top dog over her but never pushes it, it's more like a silent agreement.
Just look out for things like food agression and step in straight away to stop it as that is something you dont want at all.

Re: Bringing a new pup home
Thanks a lot I just wanted 2 find out so if there were going to be any problems I can't prevent them before it got bad:-). I am feeding them seperate at the moment because they are on different foods. If my male does get aggresive with his food should I take it away from until he is relaxed?

Yes, they have to know your the provider and controller of the food.DylanLovesStaffs wrote: If my male does get aggresive with his food should I take it away from until he is relaxed?
I have always fed them together but stayed in the room while they eat. Marley did once growl at laska when she went near him while he was eating. I just said a firm no and picked both food bowls up. that was the first and last time he did it.
I always make them sit and wait for food before putting it down as well, if one sits they get the food while the other soon plonks theyre butt down when they realise they arnt getting fed.

Re: Bringing a new pup home
Welcome Dylan - lovely looking pair you have there. I can only echo what Nathan's said - my two are also pretty inseparable and I also got them round about the same ages as yours. I also feed together but always supervise, always get them to sit first and the odd time there is growling over a bone or something I take it away and give it back.
Roxy is eldest and has always been more dominant where as Vinny is completely laid back - so he let's Roxy get away with quite a bit. Funny enough, as Roxy's chilling out more and more Vin has become the instigator - but it's always play and we always keep an eye on them so as not to let excitement escalate.
Like Nathan's two, mine seem to have an unspoken understanding and they are just amazing together.
I'm sure Dave will also be along to comment about his two!

I have a 2 year old bitch and a 1 year old boy in my house the bitch is the boss and she always will be lol
When we bought him home it was a bit tense at time but ice almost adopted him and would teach him loads
Know they are older he tries his luck but ice doesn't have non of it we do seperate them too give them here own space now and then but would not have it any other way
