Bringing a staff pup home
Hi guys
for a while now ive been looking to get a staff and have read lots of conflicting stuff on the net so thought i would sign up here and ask some experienced people.
basically there is a rescue not far from me and they have some staff pups there, the one i fell in love with is a chocolate brindle i believe may be wrong.she is 12 weeks old but has not been to any classes or socialising places
my question is this
i have a 8 year old golden retriever who is fantastic with other dogs, how is the best way to introduce them and also what are the chances of them getting on, i know my golden will be fine with her as he always is with any dog but will the staff be ok with him when she is older. im prepared to put in as much training as needed and lots of excersise but want to make sure before i take the big step.
also is 12 weeks abit to late to start socialising them?
thank you

Re: Bringing a staff pup home
Firstly I would start taking both dogs out together, with most rescue shelters it is a must that they meet the whole family anyway. See how they get on this way, on totally nutral grounds.
12 weeks is certainly not too old to start socializing, perfect age! Staffs are amazing, though not all dog friendly, They do need a lot of stimulation and repetative traing but are the most rewarding breed (I believe anyway) ever.

Totally, I got Moo at 8 months ish and she is amazing, and even older is fine, just gets a little harder if they already have habits. 12 weeks is nothing, a proper baby Xx

Re: Bringing a staff pup home
so how many staffs are ok with older dogs that they grow up with, obviously i dont expect the exact number lol just an idea.
im taking our dog down there soon to meet her (well tomoz) i just hope that they can get along when there adults as i would hate anything to happen.
also our golden does not like being out the house to long dont know why just never has and im looking for a fishing companion meaning i will be sat down a lake somewhere for 24-48 hrs, does this sound ok for a staff, of course i will take plenty of water food and toys and be able to go for walks as i fish near a friend who can watch my gear.

Re: Bringing a staff pup home
I can't answer your first question, I have only ever had 1 dog at a time and niether have ever been dog aggressive. I think they would be fine but I'm not one to comment there, its more staff/staff you need to think about but staffy/8yearoldretriever I can't see a problem. As with the fishing, I can't ever say I've been out for 24-48 hours I have found they will go for as long as you want them too. Just don't overdo until she is a little older. Probably not a good idea to her to love swimming though as you'll never catch a thing

Re: Bringing a staff pup home
I got my boy Taz at 12 weeks old and then another female at 6 months old then their daughter and they all get along fantastically. I can not see a problem accuring with your current boy and a possible new staffy pup especially seens its female.
I think they will get along great, You just have to make sure you are on top of things you control play time, feeding time and walk time and there shouldn't be a problem,
As for the pup currently not having any socialising experience she is so young and her mind is ready to take in all the information needed, she will learn really quickly so i can not see that being a problem either.
As for the camping I think she is a little young and she will need a settling in period but later on i can't see that being a problem either.
I hope you do take her home as it is always great to hear of another adoption of this amazing breed.

Re: Bringing a staff pup home
I agree 12 weeks is a great age for a resue dog and certainly not to old to be socialized. The dogs are of opposite sex so IMO that will increase the likely hood that they will get along. In fact your Golden will most likely help teach your puppy proper behavior. Can't imagine why anyone would give up a puppy though.

Re: Bringing a staff pup home
Fantastic advice already, nothing I can really add! Sure your two dogs will get on fine and your boy will love to have a companion. We have done 2/3 days long camping and hiking trips with our dogs and they have been fine. Well done for rescuing, so rewarding
The website is invaluable, if you dont know the answer to something you can be sure someone else will!!

Re: Bringing a staff pup home
they are best introduced in a neutral habitat, aka a bigish garden if you have one or where you usually walk your dog therefore it will just be meeting another dog, then let them play and hopefully get on, both staffs and labs are really good dogs so it should all be fine however you do it, and still give your golden retreiver as much attention as you can because if she feels left out she could turn on te pup from what ive heard. hope it helps:D

a pup at 12 weeks of age will turn out as you like it all depends on how much you put into it
