Correcting Pups Ears.
Just found out on Saturday at a local Staffy show that the mother of our bitch had its ears glued as a pup. After showing a few photos of our dog to a breeder, he told me the dogs ears are too high. Would it be considered cruel to correct a dogs ears at 9-11 weeks if they are outside the breed standard. Or would this only be for show dogs.

Re: Correcting Pups Ears.
why do you want to change her ears, why not just leave them to grow naturally. A pups ears go a bit mental when they are teething anyway!

I havnt changed her ears. Shes 15 mo. The breeder never told me about the mother getting her ears corrected. Plus it has been joked her ears are like a rabbits. I know there not, but they are outside the standard, rose or half pricked. She is not a show dog, just asking the question.

Re: Correcting Pups Ears.
I asked why do you WANT to change her ears, if she isn't a show dog then just leave them be, it makes no difference to her it's just a fault in the showing world

Please love your pup for what she is, no matter how her ears turn out! We can't all be beauty queens

Re: Correcting Pups Ears.
I've heard recently that it is done to some pups to correct ears but mainly for show dogs I would be worried and would allow them to grow naturally

Her ears wont be right now shes 15 mo. Im just saying i only found out that ears that are wrong can be corrected painlessley with glue at 9-11 weeks.

Re: Correcting Pups Ears.
I'm well aware of gluing pups ears heard about it years ago, but who's cares if your dogs ears aren't exact to the standard she isn't a show dog so it would be very pointless and it isn't guaranteed to work their ears can go back to normal anywaysamr39 wrote:Her ears wont be right now shes 15 mo. Re: Correcting Pups Ears.
I've only recently heard about the glue thing as well. I would think it is painless for a young pup when the cartilage of the ear is soft and malleable, and I won't go into the ethics behind it as making a pup fit for the show ring and subsequent breeding possibilities.

She could have been a show dog if i had have wanted her to be one. Whether she would have won anything, i will never know, shes now spayed. We didnt go down the road of showing or breeding. Would her ears have gone against her if i had of decieded to show her.

Can we have a picture ???samr39 wrote:She could have been a show dog if i had have wanted her to be one. Whether she would have won anything, i will never know, shes now spayed. We didnt go down the road of showing or breeding. Would her ears have gone against her if i had of decieded to show her.
Yes the ears would go against her but does that really matter . I am just getting into showing my boy but not because I bought him for that , because I had a few nice comments Quite frankly if he does well then I will be chuffed to bits that other people think as much about him as I do . If he doesn't then I don't care as he is first and foremost a great family dog with his own personality and looks , showdog well and truly 2nd

The ears can be helped to sit correctly if it's done early enough, but most don't need it unless they're likely to be full pr1ck ears, and you can't usually tell that as a young pup! So you'd have to take a guess by looking at the sire & dam. Personally I wouldn't bother, but I don't like fiddling about with nature - it's deception!samr39 wrote:Her ears wont be right now shes 15 mo. Looking at your pic, I'd say her ears would have been fine for showing. The standard calls for rose or half pr1ck, and your bitch looks like she has half pr1ck, so would be fine.
