Beware of cheapo lighters
Reason for blank half hour earlier :-
There was a noise upstairs (like a bang of something falling down) and Kuchar, good boy, jumped up with a warning woof. My son went upstairs to investigate and saw a glow round the edges of his bedside drawer, opened it and found that a cigarette lighter had spontaneously gone into meltdown and set fire to a £10 note and a £5 note.
It was one of those really cheapy lighters that you light by spinning a wheel with your thumb.

Re: Beware of cheapo lighters
Had he just put it in there or something Lynda or had it been in there a while , I have seen them before where the valve doesn't shut off properly and the fuel is still burning when you put it down

Re: Beware of cheapo lighters
I don't mind at all Hayley. They are the sort of lighters you get in a pack of 4 or 5 in Poundland, I believe.
They're a rip off anyway, as I've been told they are recycled cases with just some more gas put in, so wear out long before the gas is used up.
What caused this thing to spontaneously combust I haven't a clue. Thank heavens it happened when we were in the house, otherwise it could have been more than just £15 that was lost.
(Could you let me know if any useful feedback comes to you?)

Re: Beware of cheapo lighters
Never heard of that one before and can't understand why it would just go like that without any additional heat source etc .

Re: Beware of cheapo lighters
I can't either Dave. I have my suspicions now that the lighter was used more recently than I was led to believe, and I too suspect a leaky valve with some residual heat. However, it must have been at least an hour before the "bang" and it still shouldn't have gone off like that.Dave wrote:Never heard of that one before and can't understand why it would just go like that without any additional heat source etc .
