Woodstain, varnish, satinwood..? Confused!
So I'm in the middle of decorating my house and I'm stuck on one thing..
In my living room, all the skirting boards and doors/door frames are painted in mahogany varnish, only problem is that they were all installed at different times so over the years, some of the boards are darker than the other.
I want to paint them again but I don't want to have some boards which are darker than others, so what could I possibly use to make sure everything is the same colour/shade?
Woodstain..varnish..satinwood..dulux woodsheen..? So much to choose from and I ain't gotta clue!
I want to try and keep the wood effect, so I'm not after a gloss which will completely cover it all.

How about giving everything one coat, then if some are lighter give them an extra coat, if some are still lighter give them an extra coat, until they all catch up colour wise if that makes sense

I did think that too but some of the skirting boards look almost black and I don't want the rest to look like that, hence trying to find something that will change the colour.Darcy-may wrote:How about giving everything one coat, then if some are lighter give them an extra coat, if some are still lighter give them an extra coat, until they all catch up colour wise if that makes sense
But I think I'm being a bit unrealistic thinking that I can keep the wood effect and change the colour at the same time...

I don't like gloss but have all my wood painted with satinwood, the only thing is if you use any kind of paint you may get the stain/varnish bleeding through

Ahh.. you're right, maybe I would have to sand it down first then..Darcy-may wrote: I don't like gloss but have all my wood painted with satinwood, the only thing is if you use any kind of paint you may get the stain/varnish bleeding through
You're right regarding the gloss, I don't like it too, too shiny for my liking. The only thing I've glossed in the house are the radiators!

I think the only way to get them all to look the same is to strip them back to the bare wood. You can get a gel to do that, but it takes time & it's messy. It's also poisonous to dogs, so you'd have to be careful!

I would take all the woodwork back to it's original condition, bare, then start off again with whichever finish you want. You can use Nitro Mors but this is quite potent stuff and best used in a very well ventilated area, with a lot of care, best to keep all pets well out of the way of it too:
