getting excited
Hi everyone its me again !!!!! Im I'm having a real problem with sasha weeing when we have visitors or when she meets people etc out in the street. At first she just did it when I came home from work but now its it's getting worse. Ive asked people that visit to ignore her when she jumps up but she has now wee'd mostly on all their shoes or trousers/jeans. The latest was a pair of ugg boots and I didn't know what to say they are very expensive and can't be cleaned normally she was so bad I had to put her out in the garden . I really don't know what to try next as have exhausted all advice given before....

Re: getting excited
Some bitches do seem to lose control of their bladders when they get over-excited, but I'm afraid I don't know why or how to control it. I'm sure someone will be able to advise you more soon.
How old is Sasha now, and has she been spayed?

Re: getting excited
Has she been spayed? Is she normally an excitable sort of dog?
Have you tried keeping her on a lead until she has calmed down a bit? Then ask your guests to sit down & walk her slowly up to each guest & tell her to sit in front of each one to get a treat. They mustn't give her a treat, or even look at her until she is sitting. If she gets all excited & bouncy etc, just walk her away, sit her down by herself and then try again in a minute or two.

I wouldn't get her spayed yet. Spaying can 'fix' behavioural issues, and could possibly end up making her urinary incontinent.

I can't even get dressed for work until the last minute because she just jumps on my lap before I can stop her and thats it I have to get changed. I dont want to shut her out as I want her to socialise with us ...

Remind me what food you give her? Does she seem to drink a lot, or normally?
I'd stop her from jumping on your lap or your furniture, at least for the time being.

Re: getting excited
Yes she has always got excited but as she gets older and bigger shes getting worse. We've even taken to walking her to the bus stop to meet me just to save the carpet a bit. Shes worse when I come home from work and I do completely ignore her but she can really jump now lol. I haven't tried to put her on her lead when visitors come in until she calms down. Its not even the weeing I can deal with that it can be wiped up its the shoes and clothes that is the problem. Oh and I think she becomes deaf when excited shes a very obedient puppy at all other times

Re: getting excited
Try the lead, it may help.
Also, try to introduce some mental stimulation to take the edge off the excitement. Physical exercise is great, but it doesn't tire the brain!

Re: getting excited
Its hard to stop her from jumping on my lap as mentioned before she seems to go deaf when excited and ignores commands to stop. She can jump quicker than I can get up. The hubby has just taken her for her last walk before bed and he will have to text me before he gets back so that I can get up and prepare because it will be like she hasnt seen me for a week not 15 minutes

Re: getting excited
Caryll regarding your comment from above re spaying. The vet advised me to get her done as early as possible because of seasons etc. I know absolutely nothing regarding seasons ie duration, age, walks etc as I have always had boy dogs

Re: getting excited
A lot of our Staffs get deaf when they're excited Jan, so she's not unusual in that!
Caryll's given you great advice, and I would urge you in particular to take note of her warning not to spay Sasha until she is a lot more mature. There are all sorts of reasons for this, but not least in your case is that I would doubt very much that spaying will cure the weeing problem, and indeed with my own Dobie bitches who were spayed at 2 or 3 years old they developed urinary incontinence later in life - not excitement based but wetting their beds, etc.
Have you talked to your vet about this? She may have an irritable bladder due to an infection, or possibly a weak bladder sphincter.

Re: getting excited
It was my vet that told me to get her spayed at this time not because of the weeing problem more for unwanted puppies I think. She just said that she would probably grow out of the excitement thing. Im going to give the lead suggestion a try and see how it goes. Im not sure about the spaying though surely the vet knows what they are talking about and wouldnt suggest it if it could harm the dog. If I dont get her spayed then there will be seasons etc to deal with and to be honest I dont know how to

Re: getting excited
Vets always advise spaying at 5 or 6 months, but they won't tell you the drawbacks. Early spaying 'fixes' behavioural problems and certainly doesn't cure them. It can lead to fear based aggression, perpetual puppy syndrome, poor genital developement and late closure of the growth plates. The hormones released at 'puberty' help to enable a dog or bitch to mature & become more self confident, thereby calming them down.janfrost489 wrote:Caryll regarding your comment from above re spaying. Yes, seasons can be a pain, but they are not that difficult to put up with if you know you're only going to have to cope with 2 or 3 of them! A season lasts from 3 to 4 weeks, apporximately every 6 months. The first season starts, on average, at around 6 months old (give or take a few weeks!). She will lose blood (some more, some less than others) which will gradually turn a sort of straw coloured discharge - you can buy hygiene pants to protect your furniture etc. Her vulva will swell & soften.
For the first 10 days or so, dogs will be interested in her, but she won't be interested in them, so on lead walks only, at quiet times & keep away from dog hot-spots like the park! The second 10 days are the worst! At around 13 or 14 days into her season she will be more than ready to mate with anything on four legs with fur, so keep her in! the last 10-14 days she'll be back to being interesting, but not interested, so back to lead walks. After that, she's safe again.

Any of the pet shops should sell them, or you can get them online. Are the dogs next door castrated?

Chloe has always pee'd with excitement and we go in the back way and let her into the garden first. She's now about 18 months and it's getting better.

My sisters bitch was spayed early (on advise from the vet) and has trouble holding her bladder as a result, I would definitely consider waiting until she's had a couple of seasonsCaryll wrote:Sorry, I posted before you said this!janfrost489 wrote:Hi sasha is 6 months now and she goes in at the end of the month to be spayed. Yes a high fence on both sides with no holes that I am aware of. I was thinking more of them barking, whining etc if dog seasons are anything like cat seasons 3 or 4 weeks of that will def become a problem

Re: getting excited
Unfortunately vets have a bee in their collective bonnets about spaying (and indeed neutering) at 6 months old. I was told by my own vet that I should get Kuchar neutered at 6 months old, as this was the "latest thinking". When I had Dobie bitches several years previously, the thinking then was to wait until the bitch had had her first season and then spay. More or less the same for dogs, wait until they were lifting their legs to wee.
So, I started to think, and investigated on this forum and on the internet in general about the pros and cons of early neutering (of either sex) and the general consensus of opinion was that early neutering interferes with the normal growth of bones in a young dog and also "fixes" the dog's mentality at the particular stage of puppyhood he or she is at when it is done.
I know seasons can be a pain for all concerned, but not impossible to deal with. These days you can get special knickers for bitches in season which saves a lot of mess (don't keep them on 24 hours at a time though). Come to think of it, the use of these may well help keep your friends' Ugg boots safe, if you pop one on before they visit!
Sasha may well grow out of it, I couldn't honestly promise but she is very young still so the chances re high that she will.
I would just urge you to research and consider before you decide to spay her before she's finished growing.

Re: getting excited
Maybe, but it isn't your problem. As long as you take reasonable steps to keep her out of their way then it's up to the neighbours to restrict their dogs as necessary. Harsh advice, maybe, but true!janfrost489 wrote:Yes a high fence on both sides with no holes that I am aware of. Re: getting excited
Hi ive just had a look on ebay for the pants and they sell them on there and yes lynda thats a very good idea but I think I will try the lead advice first and see how she goes lol. As for the neighbours caryll we don't really talk to them much apart from to say hello. Maybe I should give them a knock and forewarn them. Sasha is 6 months tomorrow and so in theory could come into season anytime. Are there any particular signs to indicate this. I really don't know what to do now I dont want to do anything that may have a negative effect on her

Re: getting excited
When she comes into season you will notice a slight blood tinged discharge & her vulva will start to swell. The discharge will get heavier (with some it's very light, with others it's a bit heavier) and will gradually turn straw coloured.
Yes, I'd have a friendly chat with your neighbours just to warn them that their dogs might be a bit upset for three weeks fairly soon. It can't hurt to be forewarned!
I'm not trying to talk you out of spaying her - that's your personal decision - but I really would advise you to wait until you have at least sorted out her excited weeing, and preferably let her have two or three seasons first.

Ive just noticed that sasha is due to go into get spayed on Wednesday but im going to phone the vet and postpone it until ive had time to have a proper think about it which means that she will be having her first season before I make up my mind what to do so I had better start preparing I guess ......

I think you're being very wise.
Give yourself time to think, and time to work through her problems before spaying.

Re: getting excited
Hiya ladies thank you for all your advice its much appreciated. I called the vet and cancelled Sasha's appointment she asked why so I told her that I was researching the pitfalls of early spaying and even though she said that there wasn't any proven reasons why she shouldn't be spayed at an early age she accepted that it was my decision. Im going to let sasha have the first season and see how we all cope in particular sasha I dont want her getting distressed every 6 months

Re: getting excited
Many bitches cope perfectly well with seasons. The only one of my bitches that had problems was afterwards - she used to get phantom pregnancies!
To me, though, the real alarm bells against early spaying for Sasha is her nervous/excitable weeing. Spaying could well 'fix' it, and you'd be stuck with it for the rest of her life.

Re: getting excited
The thing is, if you're not sure then you're better off waiting for a while. Once it's done, it's done & there's no going back. But if you wait & gather info, you can still get it done later.
Meanwhile you can work on the weeing & hopefully make some real headway there.
