Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
No. 1, get him off the Bakers. It truly is terrible food with so many additives it's unbelievable! Also, if you want to add oil, make it salmon oil or olive oil.
When did the pooing start, or has he always done it?

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
Seriously, even on a tight budget you can do better than Bakers - some ofthe additives are known to cause cancer in humans & are related to hyperactivity & stomach upsets. Try a supermarket's own brand with no colouring rather than Bakers.
Can you try getting up once during the night for a while? Say around 3am and see if he needs to go out? I know it's a pain, but it will help. After a week or so you can then start to lengthen the time between bed time & getting up to re-train him to hold on.
I tend to take my dog out literally last thing before I go to bed - so that's anything between about 10pm and midnight or so, and he usually poos on that walk. I don't go far, I'm only out for about 20 minutes or so.

I didnt need to read past bakers. Frankly im shocked a vet did not tell you to get off it immediately. It should be illegal.

Here is a list of dried food recommendations :- http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/dry_food another couple of good dried foods that aren't on the list but are good mid priced foods are James well beloved & wainwrights which you can get fron pets at home.

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
Take a look at James Welbeloved at Pets At Home, it is very often on offer or Wainwrights, both a good quality food reasonably priced:steplce wrote:What's the best food for up to £25

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
+1 for the James Wellbeloved dried food here and it is available to buy from your local RSPCA too for the same price as it would cost you at PetsAtHome. Buying from them adds much needed money to a fantastic charity. A 7.5Kg bag lasts Ozzie a little over 3 weeks and costs £30, so about a tenner a week

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
Also, I have found in the past that walking a dog within an hour of feeding him triggers his digestion process. If he is eating at 5, then being relatively inactive till 9, perhaps his evening meal is only beginning to start digesting after you have gone to bed.
I tend to feed Ozzie around 4-6 PM and walk him for about an hour straight after he has eaten. Generally he will poo towards the end of that walk or at his 'before bed' 10 min walk.
If changing his routine doesn't help, you should try Caryyl's advice above and get up in the night to toilet him

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
I'm using Wainwrights trays as Kuchar won't contemplate dried food. I get a box of 12 from PAH for £9 something, and as he has three quarters of a tray per night the box lasts about 1 and a half weeks.

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
works out quite expensive then ?? A 15kg bag of dry lasts my 2 about a month or just over (£40)Lynda wrote:I'm using Wainwrights trays as Kuchar won't contemplate dried food. Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
Please think about changing your routine. A dog should never be walked within an hour (minimum) of having his main meal. Doing so quadruples the chance of bloat/gatric torsion, which can potentially be fatal.DafnPuppet wrote:Also, I have found in the past that walking a dog within an hour of feeding him triggers his digestion process. Personally the only one I'd go for out of those is Autarky. The rest have poor ingredients with far too many grains.

I tried him on that and he wouldn't touch it. My budget is £25 a monthly Max

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
pero is decent enough but overriced for what it contains. the "staffy" thing is what your paying for but its no different than other ranges
and you say £25 a month max, well the £40 bag of food may sound exensive, but it lasts 2 months so you are really saving £10 a month

I honestly couldn't recommend any of the others. They all have far too much maize or grain fillers.

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
Mine won't touch most things unless I add a slosh of warm water. She's on the last of a bag of Wainrights I bought in the summer hols so lasts well, they say 90p a day but not sure on how they work that out because the feeding guidelines are always a bit vague.

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
A good quality food is essential for good health. Bakers is the bottom of that scale. As is pedigree. Have you ever considered Raw? It would be cheaper than £25 a month.

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
ours were on bakers mixed with mince from our local animal feeds (I boil it before mixing) the oldest poo'd in his cage every night! we tried a smaller cage, walk before bed, getting up in the night to let out for a wee, even slept downstairs to try and stop it! we took him off bakers onto the animal feeds local brand (a bit cheaper aswel) and been fine since.

Better than some of the others, although still very high rice content. But better rice than wheat or maize.steplce wrote:burns active?

If you want to check how good a dog food is use this site http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/search-which-dog-food.php?q=Search+the+site&x=20&y=15. It is really handy, I use the Pero SBT and it is a decent food for those on a budget.

Re: alfie keeps pooing over night
Have you ever thought of feeding the Raw diet? That can work out quite cheap if you have a big freezer where you can store the meat.
