belle refuses to go for walkies!!
Hi I'm having trouble with belle and walks, she refuses to step out of the front door or walk up the street (8 house cul de sac) so not that far. Most times she starts to walk when she eventually gets to the top of the street and loves her walks but other times she just point blank refuses to walk anymore I've tried treats toys praise etc but nothing seems to be working. I know it's still early days as she's just getting used to the big wide world, but I hope she'll get better over time, has anyone else had problems or experience like this?

Do you have anyone else who could go out on a walk with you, children are great for getting puppys out and about.

Aww belle it really is fun once you get out there, Darcy was like this Rachel, even now she sometimes has to be coaxed out, we just don't fuss her when she's like this, keep at it you'll get there

Have you tried jogging a couple of paces & then calling her in a really silly, excitable voice?
When you say you've tried toys, were they squeaky toys?

Try enticing, one step at a time. If you have a front gate, put her collar & lead on but leave her by the door. Go to the front gate & crouch down & call her, maybe with a treat. If she doesn't come, just move a couple of steps nearer & try again.

This might sound so simple but have you tried ignoring? Put a bit of tension in the lead and turn your back (the tension to show you want to be doing something) and really just ignore. You will look silly but thats what worked for me.

Re: belle refuses to go for walkies!!
Bruno was EXACTLY the same. Now he's raring to get out and explore!
Don't worry about how silly you look (my neighbours probably think I'm a loon) but lots and lots of encouragement is what she needs, as excited as you can be! Even when she only takes one step, make a massive deal about what a good girl she's being and she'll soon realise that walks are fun
Good luck!

Lola was exactly like this! We had to take her out in the car and plop her on the beach and then she loved it. She soon learned to walk straight from the house after that. Don't worry, it just happens

The big wide world must seem so frightening to them at first!

Chiquito did something similar at about 5 months - I kept perservering with the treats etc (and didn't worry too much about walks) and he 'got over it' after about 3 weeks.

Re: belle refuses to go for walkies!!
My pup was the same,he hated the lead and didnt like being walked would get him to the top of the street (only a few doors up) and he would just sit and refuse to move,we bought an extension lead and the first walk was an instant result 3 times day he was being walked and loving it then after awhile i threw the lead away and put him back on the normal lead and have never had a problem, everytime hes fed about 10mins later he goes to the front door and sits there telling me he wants to go out for a walk.
Just dont feel sorry for him and keep at it and soon it will be a distant memory

Re: belle refuses to go for walkies!!
update on Belle's walking. we rode it out for few days doing all the tricks under the sun but still our street seemed to scary for her, so I picked her up and carried her to the top and taaadaaaa!!! she walks no problem and loves it only problem is now actually getting her to walk up the street and not wanting to be carried because I don't think i'd manage to do that when shes fully grown lol!!

Re: belle refuses to go for walkies!!
No, she'll be a heavy girl! That's why I wouldn't have picked her up.
It's great that she's enjoying her walks, though. But you've now still got to work out how to get her from your door to where she's comfortable.
Do you have any friends/relatives/neighbours that she loves? Maybe one of them could stand a few yards down the street & call her when you come out, and then gradually increase the distance?

Re: belle refuses to go for walkies!!
That's a good idea from Caryll. Our neighbours had a dog years ago (before we moved next to them) and he always had to drive the dog 100 yards down the road, then get him out, before the dog would walk. He then walked a treat! Funny little things aren't they?!!
