Fetch advice for Jasmine
Hi All. So following on from my walking dilemma, I have managed to part train Jasmine to fetch with her favourite squeaky ball in the garden, and thinking this may help on our walks if i take it and try it in an enclosed space for her. Could distract her from all those tempting humans lol! Anyway, its great exercise for her in the garden at the moment, i throw the ball and say 'fetch', she gets it, returns to me but i would like to know how to train her to 'give' the ball willingly, or drop it. Once she is back, it becomes a game of tug of war to get the ball (in which i nearly lose half my fingers!), and for some reason once i prize it from her grippy jaws, she starts madly biting my legs and ankles, which really hurts!!!
Anyone have any advice on how to train her to do this? I have tried wafting a treat next to her nose to get her to let go, but so far this hasn't worked. Thanks in advance!

I taught leave with a treat and now I still have to take the ball out of her mouth but if I say leave she will let go! Sorry probably not much help!

We also used treats. Ask her to "drop" it while holding the treat for her and lots of praise when she drops the ball. We found it work well to get Tip to also let go of things she should not have.

We also use the Leave command with Rocky and a treat. It's very useful to have this training in place which ever word you decide to use stick with it.

Yes treats works for us too, you could try having another favourite toy to hand and get her to drop and swap the toys.
Sometimes they are more toy orientated than treats.

Thanks but we cracked it with a treat in the end. The secret it seems, is cheese:-)! She dropped the ball, and now does it on the drop command. She concentrated more on me today on the walk too, once we had a short game of fetch, so a good day all round!!!

Re: Fetch advice for Jasmine
Bribery works a treat, they'll soon let go for a small treat.
Something with a strong scent such as little bits of cheese etc and put it in your closed hand and as you issue your command such as 'drop' 'leave' etc place your hand near them where they can smell the treat. Once they release reward them with the treat, as you continue to repeat this process they soon learn. After a while you won't need the treat etc as a close fist will be enough, before long the command will be enough as they get used to it te commands.
This has worked a treat with our dogs, they'll do anything for a bit of cheese. Seem to be struggling with the il ironing though!
