Walkies advice for 13 week old Jasmine!
Jasmine has been walking for a couple of weeks now, and so far nothing too major to worry about.
However yesterday and today she has started to 'roll' around alot once we get onto the common, which is a bit odd and quite annoying lol, and also she is obsessed with biting her lead and trying to play tug of war with it ALL the time. She has never really taken to her lead. We let her off once on the common, as she has been having training since she was 10 weeks and is doing brilliantly with recall (up to now), and we practice at home all the time.
So the recall issue raised its ugly head yesterday. She is fab until we see another person, in particular, a child. She just goes nuts and no amount of high value treats, calling, distraction brings her back! I have had disapproving looks from parents, but she is so loving and playful, she just loves people (typical staff, i know!). With dogs, she is submissive and friendly and comes to me after she has had a little play, so not too worried about this, but its the child thing. Any tips/advice?
She is absolutely mad as a barrel of monkeys, and so hectic lol, but we love her to bits. I just wish she would chill out a bit:lol: . Can I expect her to calm down anytime soon, and is this normal?? Should i just continue to practice, or is she just going to run off regardless in these situations?

I would invest in a long training line and keep her on that while you practice recall

I'm with saz on this, I have a long training line that I use with Darcy as her recall can be selective like this one.

Thanks ladies. I really like the long line idea, but a question. How do you hold it? In a roll? and does it get awkward when she comes back, with loads of extra line? Sorry for all the questions! x

Just let it trail in the floor, that way no one gets triped up! keep hold of the end to start with but as she gets better you can let go

They always are when there are no distractions but with other dogs and people around its a different story!
With each thing you teach her be it recall, sit, stay etc practice it in lots of different environments, so start at home (do each room), in the garden, on the street, quiet corner of the park, busy park etc. Start easy and work upwards

Re: Walkies advice for 13 week old Jasmine!
Thank you. I aim to practice with her at least once a day. Stay, down, come to call and no jumping up are on the agenda at the moment. She is doing very well. Have done garden, kitchen, and front room so far. Also treat her every time she returns to my side when out and about.

Ah brilliant, she's still a baby, it will all come together eventually
Not sure what training method your using but I used marker training with Daisy, with 'yes' as my marker word. It works well because it can be hard to get the treat to them as the do the required action (human reactions are just not quick enough!), so they don't necessarily realise what there getting the treat for straight away. Its easier to say the word then the treat follows, basically the same as clicker training but without a clicker. I was taught it on a course and have found it really useful

As above long training leads are a godsend, not too sure on the rolling could just be excitement.

Rocky does quite a bit of rolling around, we just put this down to the fact he is happy/excited to be out and about.Jasminesmum wrote:Anyone any experience with the rolling thing also?? x
We also use a long training lead as recall has never been 100%

Do you walk on a collar or a harness?
You will need a harness for the long line and it may help to prevent her 'playing' with her lead too.

Re: Walkies advice for 13 week old Jasmine!
Pebbles does the rolling around too. She does it lots when she is in the grass. I let her get on with it as it seems to make her happy
Her recall is non existent when there are people about so I use a long training lead. It can be a bit of a pain when it gets tangled up but the one i got is flat and thick so it isn't too bad.
I am finding lead walking and recall the hardest things to teach her. She is also 13 weeks. So I guess we will have to stick with the training.

Re: Walkies advice for 13 week old Jasmine!
Bruno rolls around like a mad thing when he's out and about. He also bombs around and trips over his own feet which sends him flying.
Right from the word go we've let him off lead, I have done with all my puppies and feel it enhances their recall because when they're little and still unsure of the world they are more likely to stay close or come back when called. This has worked so far with Bruno but I can understand it's not for everyone

Re: Walkies advice for 13 week old Jasmine!
Thanks everyone. Like you Rosie, she has been let off since her first walk, and to be fair her recall is pretty good most of the time. It's just kids that really get her excited lol.
I agree re the rolling. Think it's just excitement, but sometimes she just rolls and rolls, it's so funny. Think I will persevere with the training and buy a long line just in case.

Are there any badgers or foxes get on the common? That's exactly what Dempsey does & he normally comes home stinking of badger!!Jasminesmum wrote:Anyone any experience with the rolling thing also?? x
They also like to get their coat wet from the dew, especially if the day is a bit warm.

I'm not sure about the badger/fox thing. Will keep my eyes open on the grass! Yes she does love the grass, bless her:-)
