Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
We have got Jasmine used to her collar at last. She hated it at first and kept scratching, but now she is fine.
We attached a lightweight lead to her collar so she could just run around the house and garden with it. She hated it at first, she kept biting at it and turning her head to try and get it off, but again, she got used to it.
But now, I am picking the end up and following where she goes, but she visibly panics, pulls back, tries to bite it/scrape her head along the floor to get it off her. She just totally hates it. I try to call her to me in a silly way and get her to follow me, but she just won't. One day when we had the lead on her, I picked it up, she pulled back in panic, I tried to go to her so there was no pull on the lead, but my 2 year old daughter got in the way and I got trapped and Jasmine cried and it really frightened her that the lead was being pulled:-(. I think this may have given her a negative association with it.
Any advice is much appreciated, as have puppy party tomorrow night and really want her to enjoy it, not worry about the lead!

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
Sorry you are having a hard time with her on the lead!
You can take a look at this link and it may help if you haven't seen it already:
http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/training_a_puppy_to_walk_on_a_lead
At our puppy training class we were also told to keep them walking by our side with treats every so often and praise them for keeping by you, just slow steady steps at first in the garden or somewhere they are comfortable!

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
Thanks Maria. Yes have tried all the methods. Even a her favourite Arden grange treats won't make her move with me. She just wants to run back into her crate!!
She is a very responsive girl. She loves her treats and we have taught sit and come here, but I'm at a loss here. She just looks terrified when I pick it up, poor love:-(

Darcy was the same, it just takes time she'll get there

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
She definitely will get there! Patience, persistence and consistency is the key! Also try and make it as fun as possible for her, instead of fussing about her walking with the lead on, distract her from the situation at first, have her collar on and maybe her favourite toy to distract and pop the lead on and then go from there with lots of fun fuss and praise! She will do great in no time

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
Very much persistence and lots of really yummy treats, I always used mattessons sausage, and just keep walking with her but every few secs make her stop and sit and treat if you do it often enough she will get the hang of it. After all Rome wasn't built in a day

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
In my opinion he uses methods that are, aggressive, outdated and sometimes cruel. He gets obedience through fear & pain. I have seen videos of him physically punishing dogs and using things like shock collars until the dog wees itself it's that scared.Broxi wrote:How do you work that one out? has dogs brains changed over the last yearsDarcy-may wrote:The link should help you out & I agree stay away from Caesar Milan his methods are very datedJasminesmum wrote:Thanks for your advice. I don't like him or advocate his work.

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
Thats in extream cases,at the end of the day hes trying to correct a dogs behavouir,he isn't doing that just to make a dog walk on a lead etc its in other bad cases,he is using some methods to get a dog under control so that his owners can not only have a better behaved dog but also a dog that doesnt attack other dogs and humans,he is bascially helping to stop owners having to put there dogs to sleep. because quite frankly some of the dogs i have seen on his show would be put to sleep

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
Well I have to say even in extreme cases his methods are in my opinion unacceptable, you are aloud your opinion and I'm allowed mine.
And we are now off topic and taking over the original post so back on topic of jasmines lead walking

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
Koda used to jump around like a cat on a hot tin roof when she first went on a lead.... then when she conquered that and could finally go out shed just lay there and not move and would resist any pulls to move her, biting the lead... but then as if shed been doing it from the start off she went followed by loads of cheers from me....

Re: Help!! Jasmine HATES her lead!
Awwww thanks everyone! Yes Steve, that's exactly how I would describe it!
Think I will use a bit of cheese to coax her, she loves it. I think she may improve once she has other dogs to focus on tomorrow. We shall see! X
