Nightmare and its getting worse!
I am getting to the end of my tether with Jasmine at the moment:-(.We took Jasmine for her walk last night, and whilst we know her recall isnt 100%, we havent had too many probs as she doesnt got too far from me and its easyish to get her back.
However, last night was a complete nightmare. It was fading light, and we let her off as usual once on the green, but when she saw some kids on the other side of the green (which is large), she was gone. No amount of calling, running away from her, cooked chicken which she previously stuck by my side for, would make the slightest difference. And the scariest thing was that they were on this side of the road, but what if they had been on the other?? I dread to think. So i feel like my only option is a long line, but she hates the harness. She really gets distressed with one on. It took us long enough to get her used the collar and lead, but she is ok with it now. Can i still use a long line with a collar? She is all over the place on walks at the moment too, so worried she will get tangled up in everything, making walking even more stressful!! She goes absolutely nuts with people, so excited, but its becoming a danger now for her, and im starting to dread walking. Please help!!

Re: Nightmare and its getting worse!
if her recall wasn't 100% you shouldn't have really let her off in such a large area as an incident like this was always on the cards keep it to a small enclosed area to start with then widen the area .
just imagine if you had getting full access to the wide open space (yes its been there before but she was not tuned in to it )for the first time and you could see things in the distance you to would want to explore
now getting back to the long line i wouldn't use a long line on a coler as when there using them they can be all over the place at first so to much a risk of chocking
but please dont think your coming to the end of your tether with jasmine as she only little and she needs to learn she will get there

You can use a long line with a collar, but you run the risk of hurting her neck/throat if you pull her up short.
What have you done so far to teach her to walk nicely on lead & to come back when called?

yes it gets better, just takes training and yes an extendable lead then you can just use a collar and really practice recall Xx

Re: Nightmare and its getting worse!
some will others wont i can only walk my boy long lead now as he desided at 1 after about 8months of good recall to stop listening so now 100ft long line which he normally only goes 50ft away from me on but take it off and he would be away exploringJasminesmum wrote:And also, is this an issue that gets better with time, when they mature??

Re: Nightmare and its getting worse!
Thank you all. I only feel as though im failing with her walking really, im not at the end of my tether with her in general....she is lovely, but very frustrating!! Totally agree, looking back i shouldnt have taken her to the rec off the lead. Its a very large open space, so from now on will avoid that one untill her recall is much better. Woods it is for now.
As for training, I am teaching her to sit and stay at the moment. at puppy training classes she was one of the best recall wise, and out of training at home and walkingl is brilliant with no one else around and treats and her ball. I never call her to scold etc, and to keep her close whilst walking i intermittently treat and praise. I havent done any actual lead training as such yet, so any advice on this is greatly appreciated!

Re: Nightmare and its getting worse!
How old is she? Frankie went through a terrible stage with recall. Just keep going with the training, has she got a squeaky toy or something you could take? The challenge is making yourself more exciting than what she wanted to get to, que the crazy noises, jumping up and down etc. it all takes time and you will get there . I use a long line with frankie, it took a bit of getting use to and a few embarrassing face plants to the floor on my part but he loves it. Frankie will also do anything for some liver cake!

Re: Nightmare and its getting worse!
Darcy's recall comes and goes so in situations were there is lots of distractions I use a training line and a harness otherwise she'd be of into the distance

Re: Nightmare and its getting worse!
I think i may persevere with the harness so I can use a long line. Just ordered a line and harness from Amazon.

Re: Nightmare and its getting worse!
You could try putting the harness on around the house so she gets used to it?
