introducing a puppy to an older staffy.....
Hi all,
We have had Buster a staffy cross rescue dog for a couple of years now, we knew nothing of his previous life before we got him only that he was badly treated and dumped out on the street. He has turned into a fantastic family dog and is really happy, he is great with people and children he regularly plays with my 18 month old nephews. He does however have no social skills with other dogs, when out walking his hackles go up and he becomes very excited and barks and growles. A friend of a friend's bitch has just had a litter of staffy x puppies and we'd love to have one , I just wondered if anyone on here has introduced a puppy into their home with an established dog and could give me some advice, I don't want to undo all that we have achieved with Buster but I thought by having a puppy it might help him with his social skills.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

That should read "when out walking and he sees another dog his hackles go up etc etc"

I've only ever had one dog at once so can't offer much advice, although you can take a look at these topics regarding introducing a new pup socializing.

Re: introducing a puppy to an older staffy.....
My lexy is 15 months old and diesel is about 14 weeks ... Ull notice the new pup will always want to play and bite with ur older staffy possibly drawing abit of blood etc but also notice ur older dog gettting aggetated with him/her but thats just natural. But if u recognise ur older dog getting annoyed seperate them both for a while to help settle ur current dog . Ull also notice when they play it looks quite rough but its also normal as im goin through the same thing. Do not let ur new pup purposly try to gain full domain of your home as it could turn ugly with a possible attack from ur current dog so keep an eye all the time wen they play etc as my lexy launched at diesel last week anf all i cud sgout eas AWWWW * and run like the hammers of hell to stop her. Jealousy is another factor u need to watch as new puppies are cute abd cuddly but constant attention to a new pup can cause ur dog to get jealius and possibly gain anxiety and becone unwell ... I hope this helps

Re: introducing a puppy to an older staffy.....
A month ago we got a new 6 month Staffie pup to be honest I was worried about what our 7 year old staff would be like with her.
What I did learn was RELAX!! If you are tense youre dog will be, be CALM they seriously pick up on everything you are feeling. It took me bursting into tears to come to the realisation that the only problem my dog was having was what I was inadvertently giving out. I was devastated that I had made Stella feel this way. From that point on we all chilled out and they just get on like a house on fire, the doggy play fights are quite shocking until you realise it is just play and Stella is a happier dog now I think.. I love these dogs and wouldn't have any other breed.
Good luck, be vigilant be calm and enjoy xx

Re: introducing a puppy to an older staffy.....
Lots of members have introduced pups into their household and it's gone really great, I'm sure some will be along shortly to offer some more advice, we only have Darcy and although she's socialised with other dogs she's never really met puppies, until my aunty got a pup, and they get on like a house on fire, although he does get a little jumpy occasionally so I step in and calm play for a little while.
Perhaps on walks although his hackles go up it may not be aggression but apprehension of the unknown? hope this helps.
