destructive chewer
Does anyone have any recommendations for chew toys for a destructive chewer? I live in Australia. I brought her a rope toy meant for large dogs, within an hour, it was shredded and had to be thrown. Brought a squeaky cat when we got her... It lasted several months, but last week she ripped its ears and tail off. Teddy bear got its head ripped off. Tennis balls last all of 5 min before they are de furred, and chunks torn out of them!
I got her a kong, and so far apart from being thrown into walls and the fishtank, its still holding up.
A (very irritating) squeaky plastic bone seems to be holding up ok.
Shes 8? months, and its only all of a sudden that she has a single mindedness to kill all her toys. Shes even sneaking into step daughters room and trying to kill her slippers, her toys, and all of our shoes...

Haha yes our 2 do this! Hubby has no matching socks left I've found Kongs, Stag Bars and Nylabones are the only toys that are indestructible. 'Croc' sandals seems to last a while too

Re: destructive chewer
Ive heard of nylabones, Ill see if our petshop will get me one in! Stag bars ive never heard of, Ive seen a half wood, half man made material toy that's supposed to be strong, but when you read the back, its only for non destructive chewers.
Id buy a pair of crocs for her if it would help. Unfortunately she seems to have expensive taste, and ignores the thongs in exchange for the nike sneakers.
Shes currently sitting in my lap enjoying all the photos on here.

The Stag Bars are real antlers and truly are indestructible! Might be worth finding some old Crocs on Ebay maybe? I had 2 pairs - a brown pair and a blue pair - I now have 2 good left sandals and they have a right sandal each

Re: destructive chewer
This is a common issue with staffs. They have a high prey drive so tend to 'rag' whatever they get hold of and they love to chew! My boy had a MAJOR thing with anything wooden when he was younger. I found a couple of squirts of perfume or a spray of deodorant on the skirting boards/door frames/table legs/chair legs/banistairs etc, worked a treat

Stag bars are great, though probably should be supervised at the beginning.
I used Vicks vapour rub on furniture and worked a treat.

Ha Katy is really destructive, we call all her toys Arthur even her toy basket has been destroyed!!!! She loves her stag bar that is her only toy that is intact. Will be getting her a Kong for her 1st birthday next week. But she loves to raid our log basket to chew the wood, keeps her happy but what a mess

Ill try the vicks! Shes managed to chew the door frames to shreds. Pulled the threads on the new leather couch. Eaten her way through many blankets. Pulled the pins out of her travel cage and ate them. Turns the robo vacumm on so she can chase and attack it....
Lucky we love her!

Re: destructive chewer
Do you find your staffy's hoard treasures too? Misty fills her crate with bits of leaves, wood, whatever she can find. The amount of times I've had to call the vet due to her sneaking into places she shouldn't be, and stealing 'treasures' is ridiculous! Even putting things up on work benches doesn't stop her, as we found out last week when she stole a bottle of power steering fluid. The shed had only been open for 5 min 3 days prior, she hid it until she thought she had free time.

Re: destructive chewer
I've got 4 kids and ruby loves nothing better than sneaking off where its quiet and chewing peppa pig figures, train tracks, doll house people, laundry baskets, not to mention nappies from the bathroom bin are a big hit- try cleaning that up!!! She also loves to eat the post and I keep having to go to the post office with bits of 'sorry you were out' cards hoping that while I'm out nothing else is being delivered! Aaaaahhhh!!! Big chewer. Luckily she hasn't eaten the banisters (much) or the skirting boards as we rent our house! That reminds me, I must go and polyfil that hole in the wall mext to her bed.....

Re: destructive chewer
Tip has a bear that has somewhow survived though she ripped another one's head off. She sleeps on an continental pillow and her blanket. No beds as she likes chewing too. We use Vicks in our house too. Works like a charm. She loves chewing on sticks too.
She has "killed" my left Crock sandal. Pink has never been my color.

Re: destructive chewer
Hi Guys
My 4 year old has just started to bite and chew at a metal door whilst we are out. We have just moved house, and on top of that he gets separation anxiety when my wife is not home.
After reading your posts, I might give the vicks a try on the doors. Failing that any other thoughts
Cheers
Barry

Re: destructive chewer
We don't pay him too much attention. A goodbye, a request for him to get in his house (kennel), a chew stick (which he generally doesn't touch until we get home) and we leave.

Re: destructive chewer
I'd say that the house move has completely thrown him!
Can you start from scratch? Leave him for 2 minutes, come back (no fuss leaving or coming back) and gradually increase it?

Re: destructive chewer
Will start this from today. Thanks so much for the advice. Even a friendly ear is reassuring ear that it isn't an uncommon thing for staffs to do and things can improve with a little work and patience.
I am also going to try and leave him outside while I'm inside for periods as we'll. Thought it might teach him it's ok to be outside on his own? Should I be taking it a step further and stop him from sitting on the couch and sleeping in bed with us.

Re: destructive chewer
Oh poor Dibley :-( It does sound like the house move has upset him a little. Maybe the previous owners had animals which he can smell? Peanut butter stuffed into a Kong then frozen keeps our 2 occupied a little while.B & N Herberts wrote:Hi Guys

Re: destructive chewer
Hi Jo
we have tried the Kong with all types of treats, but even as a pup he wouldn't eat while we were not at home.
Its certainly a difficult one, but will just have to stick with it, and get him through. We are also going to take him a vet that specialises in behavioral therapy, and hopefully get some clinical advice.
Apart from this hes an awesome pooch, fix this and we have the perfect dog!!!!!!

Re: destructive chewer
Lol Tip is a bull terrier and would chew on the back door if we were not fast enough to let her out. When we leave her at home she gets a toy and a pat and we leave. Kitchen is the most puppy proof room in our house.
Like caryll said sometimes you have to go back from scratch. It is hard to get them to stop being off the furniture if they were allowed to before. Good luck.

Re: destructive chewer
The nylabone lasts quite a long time, and is available at the local pet shop, or possibly Kmart or big W.We are persevering with chewing when we go out, find hot English mustard or vicks seem to stop chewing on furniture...Currently replacing 6 dog beds, which have been chewed ( we have a small chihuhua cross too) Not sure how long this will last, getting to the point where maybe no dog beds will be left when we are out....
PS I am from Oz too..

Re: destructive chewer
Personally I wouldn't do that. Certainbly where I am any dog left for any period in a garden would probably end up being stoeln! But you also don't know what he's up to out there - there could be poisonous plants, for example, that you don't know about.B & N Herberts wrote:I am also going to try and leave him outside while I'm inside for periods as we'll. Sleeping on the bed, or getting on the couch are entirely up to you. I don't allow Dempsey into the bedrooms, but that's a personal decision & not because I think it's wrong! He is allowed on the couch & even the armchairs & is actually asleep on the couch right now!
