Mad The Little Swine Has Chewed A Dining Chair!

Post by Vicki29 Mon Sep 23 2013, 15:51

Hi All,

Ah my god! I got home today to find that my little darling >Smile  has chewed a massive hole in the leather part of a dining chair! Crying or Very sad

He's 8 months. Does anyone have any idea how long this will go on for? I know some are life long chewers and I'm just hoping that Jerry isn't one of those.

He had only been left for 2 hours and he has loads of chew toys. He had taken to chewing the back door mat but now he's moved onto the dining chair.

I now need to find a company who can repair it. They are £100 so hopefully it will be cheaper than that!

agree with Janey about the crate,or do you have a room like the kitchen you can put his bed in and leave him in there?we used to leave sash in the kitchen as she was a chewer but she grew out of it with in her 1st year,we even had to put socks on the wooden dinning room chairs as she liked to nibble on them Laughing

Thanks, he's closed in the kitchen but it is a kitchen/dining room. He used to be put in the crate but he's getting rather large (especially for his age). He can stand, turn around and lie down in the crate but I do feel sorry for him when he's shut in there. He's left for 4 hours at the most and that's only 3 days a week. I'm glad to hear that Stella's stopped at about 1 year, it gives me hope lol.

We leave Tip in a puppy proof room when we go out. If it is going to be longer than three hours and it is in the day-my hubby has fenced a small area in our garden for her to stay in. It keeps her safe from the other dogs as our Rottweiler female is nine years old and very moody.

Try putting vicks on the wood it really stop them chewing on the furniture.

Chloe is a chewer, unfortunately Crying or Very sad  She chewed walls until about one year old but she seems to have stopped that now, so hopefully Jerry will settle - I do hope so Smile

Hiya Vicki,
Bella is still a chewer at 10 month.
I was recommended Vicks a few weeks ago on here and it works a treat. She can't stand the smell and stays away from doors etc that have it. Obviously make sure it doesn't damage leather but it's really good.
Let me know how you get on.

My worst offender stopped extreme chewing at about 1.5 years old but that was after quite an act. I finally got wise and started crating when I went out and it has been great. Mine all love their crates and I don't have fear when I come home!

All good advice above, Vinnie is crated whilst I am out but no longer than 3 hours. Vicks did work for me briefly as Vin wasn't much of a chewer.

How much exercise does he get? on a daily basis it could help the situation and perhaps a bigger crate. Thankfully I got a gigantic one in the beginning for Vinnie to grow into. Big Grin

Zeke is 9 months. Still a chewer. Chewed my mums rather expensive riding boots not long ago I dont want to s Can I suggest you get him a treat ball or a kong and fill them with treats he loves! This keeps Zeke entertained for about 2 hours. Make sure you leave water out especially if he has biscuity treats! If this doesn't work use a crate. Zeke is crated if we are out longer than 2 hours x

How about outting him in the hall and gate off the stairs (if you have any) and close all the doors.

Rocky was also a chewer, all great advise above, I had a section of the yard fenced off for Rocky and I know leave him in there if I have to pop out, he gets a few toys and a kong and his bed to sleep in, as well as his water Smile

Luckily Bacchus wasn't much of a chewer. He did mouth a few things with "the needles" but nothing serious. He was however crated when he was very young but only uses it for sleeping now ( with the door open). Wouldn't you be cheaper investing in a larger crate rather than risk repair bills? Vics and Bitter Apple are fine but if he's a chewer he will just go for anything which doesn't have this on it and it's impractical to cover your whole house with it. And also the crate keeps your puppy as well as yor house safe.
The majority will stop chewing soon after they get their adult teeth so hang in there.

Thanks Daryl, I AM a proud dad.

I fed him Orijen Puppy for the first few months ( an excellent food ) but had supply problems over the festive period.
I get the Which magazine every month and they did a product test on dried foods and Eden came out on top. As it's made in the UK, as opposed to Orijen, which is imported from the US, I decided to switch to this. He really enjoys it, but having said that, he is not a fussy eater.
The cost including postage is £54.98 for 15kilos. I feed him 220gr daily which works out at roughly 81p per day.
