I think Archie may have mites
I noticed yesterday that Archie had 2 small bald patches on his side with a couple of little scabs in them. I rang the Vet helpline we have with our insurance and they told me to keep an eye on them and bathe them in salt water (which i have done) got him booked into the vets on Wed morning just to get him checked over cos i think they might be mites. Has anyone's puppy ever had mites before? The scabs aren't hurting him when i touch him or bathe them and he is totally fine in himself, still eating, drinking and playing

Aww for Archie & you, it could be mites, I've no personal experience sorry but your doing the right thing going to the vets, a few of our members pooches have suffered with demodex (mite) I'm sure they'll be along soon to help

Re: I think Archie may have mites
Hi Danielle
My Rocky currently has Demodex or Demodectic Mange which are mites, he has had it for roughly 3 months now and has many bald patches, mainly around his eye, top of his neck, under his muzzle, all under his arms as well as his back paws, some of the areas have scabbed, and they will go down and keep coming back up, I would definitely get this checked with the vets for a skin scraping just to confirm what it is, it may be something like a skin condition or the mites, either way Im sure the vet will be able to give the correct treatment!
Let us know how Archie gets on and if you have any other questions feel free to ask x

Poor Archie, hope all goes well at the vets, let us know.
If you are using salt make sure its a very weak solution.

Hi Maria, is it something they will always have or will they go with treatment from the vet? He only has 2 small patches atm which i have been bathing, hopefully this will help until i get him to the vets on wed x
Yeah i only put a tiny amount of salt in, advised by the vet nurse i spoke to

Re: I think Archie may have mites
They won't have it for life, it does go away with treatment, but for some it may take a while. Rocky only started off with 1 very small patch and then it got a lot worse. But the treatment will help clear it upDaniMc84 wrote:

Re: I think Archie may have mites
We started off with a fortnightly treatment of Advocate, just a topical treatment applied to the skin, as well as fortnightly baths with a medicated shampoo, but I found that it was getting so bad and Rocky was becoming so irritated that he was becoming a bit off in his general self, we are now on a treatment called Ivermectin which is given orally.

Re: I think Archie may have mites
Jax also recently was diagnosed with demodex mites! He's got two red, irritated bald patches and his feet are also very sore and itchy. The vet started him on Ivomec last week and he seems to be responding well (I think the patches are starting to heal). I've heard giving apple cider vinegar orally and topically helps too, as well as extra virgin coconut oil! I give Jax both and they seem to help with the irritation.
I'm sure he will be back to himself in no time!

Re: I think Archie may have mites
Will do Archies patches aren't red or sore and he isn't even itching them. I have bathed them in salt water since yesterday morning and this morning the tiny little scabs are turning a brown colour and look as if they are drying out. The vet nurse rang me again this morning and she doesn't seem to think he has mites but i am still going to take him to see his vet tomorrow just to be on the safe side as he may have had an allergic reaction

Re: I think Archie may have mites
It might be something simple, or may have even scraped himself, but always best to get it checked out just in case! Hope it all goes well
