Skin mites? Empty Skin mites?

Post by goldie87 Fri Aug 31 2012, 12:01

As i've mentioned on previous posts, Zeus is going through a really bad stage where he's biting/scratching his skin. It seems to be all over and he's doing it to the point where hes making himself bleed and has patchy parts now.

Although, I think it may be his food (Wainwrights dry), could it be skin mites? I've been speaking to a colleague who has had a number of dogs over the years and she mentioned that one of her dogs had skin mites which are not visible to the human eye, and can only be seen under a microscope?

Could well be, a trip to the vets may be the way to go.

My vet did skin scrapes and blood tests on my Diesel when she was a pup, luckily she was clear.

My girl had an over abundance on the natural bacteria on her skin, for her it was a case of building her immunity. She overcome her skin probs soon after.

I've also heard storage mites in dry food can be an issue rather than the food itself.

IMO , trip to the vets x

I'd change the food first. Demodectic mites don't usually cause all over itching, it starts off as quite localised & either clears on its own or worsens. If you change the food & the itchiness carries on or gets worse, then I'd go to the vet.

He's always biting/scratching on his paws and inner leg, that's pretty much the only areas that are affected. He scratches his neck quite alot but I'm pretty sure thats because of his collar.. would you class that as localised?

I'd put that more down to an allergic reaction. Mites generally start in areas such as the head/face, sides, tail, back. Rarely do they start on the legs.

When you bring him in from a walk, try wiping his legs & paws with a cloth dampened with salty water & then dry thoroughly.

Tango had a allergic reaction and the vet put it down to wainwrights trays because it started at the same time as starting them, I now give raw chicken mince mixed with burns, Clean bowl every time and he was a really fussy eater. And his skins now cleared up too Smile Good luck with Zues he's loveeeeeely Big Grin
