Ticks
Has anyone had any experience with ticks? My little man had one near his backside which was taken off by the vet. I've bought a tick removal tool from him, but I'm just wondering if there is anything to try prevent catching them? My vet didn't give much info, obviously just wanting my money.
Any info would be very much appreciated, thanks guys

Re: Ticks
There are several different options for ticks, both chemical and natural. I personally choose not to treat Chiquito, however I am sure others who do will be along with information on what they use shortly

I don't treat for them either, she has only ever had 2 and the nurse just gets rid of them for free, I tried doing it myself but messed it up so now its the vets

Re: Ticks
Yeah some flea treatments work for ticks too, but it depends if you want to use a treatment regularly.

Re: Ticks
You can get tick prevention like Frontline or Advantage (they protect against fleas as well). Personally I don't use them, mine get ticks sometimes but we just remove them if they do, but if you removing them yourself you need to be careful you get the whole lot out (my OH does it I can't!) . However if your dog is in long grass during tick season, do check them regularly.

Re: Ticks
Personally, I wouldn't bother with anti-tick treatments unless you live or go for walks in an area with a large number of ticks; forests and places with tall grass, for example. It's still important to check your dog regularly, every time you groom him (which should be at least once every two days for a short-coated dog like a stafford), to ensure that there are no ticks.
If you do suspect that he has a tick, it's important that you remove it as soon as possible, as they may cause allergic reactions and can carry diseases.

I do treat with frontline every month at the moment, as we are so often in the woods and vets here have said there are a lot about at the moment. I do it more for the disease they may carry.

A good video clip below on how to remove them, have never done it myself though:
