The OH (he drives,so he does the vets) mentioned it and he said he's not heard of it.I only saw it on the telly today (God bless Daybreak) so will tell said vet that it really is real!

The trouble with using salt (apart from leaving a horrible mess!) is that it doesn't deal with the slime trail which can also pass on the worm to the dog.
I think all you can do is use a wormer that helps prevent them taking hold, and be vigilant for coughs etc that might be a sign that he's infected.
