Puppy getting attached? Empty Puppy getting attached?

Post by rumble Tue Sep 03 2013, 09:16

Hi there guys. Was wondering what are your preferences to your pup sleeping on your bed?
Im considering not letting the pup sleep on my bed since I feel like he has formed a strong attachment to me which might affect him later when I decide to put him in another room.

He currently sleeps with me on my bed and regularly crawls into my lap when im falling asleep watching youtube or something.
As much as I like his company should I just put him on the ground to sleep alone?
Perhaps put him in another room and ignore the whining?

Edit*
he is only 2.5 months old

Bought my pup in april and has slept in the bed with me and the girl every night,i love it, he cuddles into you everynight even puts his head on your pillow, its the most cutest thing ever.

Personal preference really, for me i dont see him as a dog,i see him as a pure family member like a son.

Our pup has been in a crate downstairs from day one and that's where he'll stay for at least a year. He comes into our bed in the mornings for a cuddle but doesn't sleep there.

Definitely personal preference, darcy has a crate downstairs which she sleeps in, but she also has lots of snuggles in our bed in the morning & if I go to bed early she sleeps with me until OH gets in Big Grin

Its entirely up to you. If you want to let her sleep in your bed for a little while then move when she is older, you need to think how confusing that would be. You need to decide what you want to do and then be 100% consistent with it. If you want to begin crate training or bed training, you can wait until she is sleepy then move her to it and she will eventually know thats sleepy area Smile

It really is a case of personal choice. Maisey has slept on our bed since she was a puppy . As clearly stated above, consistency is the important thing as once they get used to something, it is very difficult to suddenly start expecting them to sleep downstairs. We love it anyhow, she is our little snuggle puss.

As Hayley says, it's a purely personal choice but whatever you decide on be consistent. I decided that a tiny puppy sleeping with us would be soooo cute but perhaps not a 20 kilo+ dog. So I crate trained Bacchus. He now has the run of the downstairs and alternates between his crate and " his " part of the sofa but comes upstairs if I oversleep and puts a wet nose on my face.

I have no idea myself if broxi can stay in our bed forever,he already steals the blankets lol but i guess if not i hope he will be like your dogs,i know one thing for certain if he is to stop sleeping in our bed he will be able to sleep anywhere he wants including the bedroom floor,i do own a crate but have never used it,i give him free fun of the house even when im out of the house.

My last Dobermann slept on my bed with me from being a tiny pup until the night she died, and oh how I missed her presence Crying or Very sad However, I had no problem with leaving her with the run of the house whilst I was at work, she didn't get stressed.

My current staffy sleeps on my bed also, from 3 months old when we got him.  Partly from laziness (none of that crying at night) and partly because I do love having a cuddly little doggy with me!  However, as he's grown older he starts off the night on my bed and then goes and sleeps on the sofa downstairs.  He rarely sleeps on my son's bed.

It is a personal choice, and obviously sometimes down to the dog too!

Don't confuse pup and choose what you want for the future ( maybe think about if you can afford a bigger bed Smile )

It's really up to you, if your happy to have him in with you then fine but if you ever need him not to be, you may have the problem of him whining! Daisy's bed is down stairs and that is where she sleeps, I sometimes let her come up with me and we don't have any problems Smile

Thanks for the responses guys.
Yeah will definitely look into most likely investing in crate/bed so I can also toilet train him as well, but its good to see alot of people also having him on your beds.
