Vets. Now.
Could be Eclampsia - a serious lack of calcium which can lead to daeth very rapidly.
Never take any chances with a bitch that has just given birth.

Totally agree, get the mother to the vets now !
My puppy's mum died of Eclampsia when my puppy was 5 weeks old and the owner is compleletely heartbroken even now.

Even if it isn't Eclampsia, you can't take chances - if she can't rear her pups, your friend will have all sorts of problems!

Re: newe mother
he rang the emergancy vets and they told him see how she is in the morning to which he told them were to go and he has taken her straight there .

Re: newe mother
It may not be eclampsia. It's just that if it is, serious complications can set in within about 6-8 hours, it's that quick & that dangerous.
At least if it isn't there's no harm done!

Re: newe mother
Is she updated on parvo shot? My sisters mate bitch went like this just after having pups she went crazy, blood shot eyes, vomiting and snapping at everything, they lost the pups and lucy.
she was only 2 weeks behind on the shot because of the pregnancy they couldn't do it.

Re: newe mother
Some rescue centres let people adopt on the understanding that they will get the dog neutered within a certain length of time, and that they will not breed from it. If they get to hear about it, does he realise that they could take her back?

Re: newe mother
How could he not know she wasn't spayed if they said she was, the don't come into season when they are spayed and males will certainly not attept to mount except dominance.
I can not judge though look what happened with Taz and Cassie I can understand accidents but...
if they lied about her being psayed did they lie about her being upto date on shots? unless like what Caryll said the shelter was under the impression he would get her spayed.

Re: newe mother
So what male had her? he didn't notice her being tied with another dog, bleeding, swelling. I would seriousely question the shelter and report them.

Re: newe mother
Poor baby, as others have said strange behaviour in lactating bitches needs to be addressed quickly. The pups are reliant on them after all. It could be an infection or pre eclampsia which is dangerous in dogs and humans.
Did he see all of the placentas passed? (one for each pup)

Re: newe mother
Thats great news but to be honest i would either move away because the shelters and vet know nothing in that area, Poor girl has been let down by both and its lucky he got her to the vets.

i think its more a case ov the shelters being overrun and not havin time to do proper checks before rehoming
and the pdsa being so cash straped

Re: newe mother
Sure enough they are extremely over run but they are profesionals and should know the difference and should keep on top of it, Thats their main problem unwanted staff's and puppies so they should be even more careful with a case like this, I would definatly call the shelter and let them know because who ever dicharged her from there made a huge mistake when it comes to their goals.

Re: newe mother
Glad she is alright
Bet your mate is relieved. Tell him well done on not taking the advise of the vet to leave it and see what happens. Some perfessions get away with murder. We all have bad days, but if I have a bad day a door handle may fall off, vets have a bad day and loved pets could be lost, they get paid far more than me to stay on the ball.
