Mouthing
Just wondering - does this stop as they get older? Lola always goes and grabs a toy and then jumps up at us. Chloe, meanwhile, just wants to take my arm in her mouth............ She's gentle (well, Staffie gentle!) I don't mind, but it is limiting me on inviting people round! If I hook a finger round her canine teeth, she's equally as happy but she needs that mouth contact.

Re: Mouthing
Bandit used to like to mouth as well. It never bothered us, but we used to warn visitors & tell him "No, leave" if he did it. Once he was told not to, he didn't repeat it (until next time the people came round!).

Thanks Caryll :-) Nice to know Chloe isn't the only one I think sometimes that we're the only ones with a dog that behaves like that!

Re: Mouthing
Lola is terrible for mouthing, I've got skinny arms and she loves putting her smelly jaws round them, she also likes to nip your bum or thigh if you turn away from the mouthing

Re: Mouthing
Chiquito loves to say hello with his mouth (ouch) .. he also uses his mouth to let you know he is over excited during play (double ouch).
A strong leave or no usually do the trick, however he still needs reminders at times ... it is getting better with age, however I expect it is something that will be ongoing for him.

Re: Mouthing
Molly is very talented at mouthing and licking! Trying to stop the mouthing. Her problem is that when you tell her to stop, she does and goes off sulking for a minute (back licking before you know it though!) and will when really excited think mouthing is a fun game once more!

Re: Mouthing
Our senior, Arni, mouths wen he gets over-excited. We only took him on at 10 yrs old so its obviously something he's been allowed to do. We have found that by grabbing the nearest toy and replacing our limb with the toy it works quite nicely, he then goes trotting off to add the toy to his stock pile - love him!

Re: Mouthing
My 2 yr old dog nips but quite hard at times and we've been told to ignore it and turn our back on her but it doesn't seem to be workin. I'm worried she's gonna really nip hard one of these days. Any other tips on stopping it? I've tries replacing our limb with toys but that only works for a sec before she's nipping again. Starting to get me down

Re: Mouthing
Rocky gets mouthy only when he wants to play tug with his rope for some reason, and as soon as I get the rope he stops, and its only the rope!! Weird but he doesn't do it hard.

Re: Mouthing
My pup has bitten nearly everyone at the dog park including a local vet nurse that goes there lol. Drawn blood a few times as well.
They all think its fun and games but a few of them give him a steady NO, and he sort of understands.
Better at home when less distractions

Re: Mouthing
Yes a firm no if its too hard, or a high pitched squeal as this is what would happen with litter mates when t gets too rough. Firm but fair always works

Re: Mouthing
Consistency is what counts. Tip mouths but we do the firm no and then rather give her a toy to bite on.
