Dempsey's new fitness regime!
After his stomach operation, he's always had a pot belly, no matter how fit he is in other areas. After the recent holiday though, we've noticed that he's actually lost a little bit of it, which is great!
Part of it, I think, was the continous, steady exercise he got all through the holiday. The other part was probably the fact that my brother wasn't there to feed him whatever he feeds him at home. Because he stays up all night, we don't know exactly what it is that he gives Dempsey, but you usually has something from the bakery, so I daresay Dempsey shares it with him.
Either way, now that we know he can lose the belly weight, even if it's only to a certain extent, I've been working out a little regime for him.
Because he has the attention span of a gnat and gets bored easily, I'm having to pick training aids very carefully. Reward treats during sessions will probably be his daily Dentastix cut up into tiny pieces. The flirt pole that I made today, which he absolutely loves, will get him moving about. I've attached one of his old stuffed toys to the end, which is a really good treat because he's never allowed to play with stuffed toys (rips them apart and eats them if he isn't supervised). The idea is that, to keep him from getting bored, I'm going to keep switching round the toys at the end of the flirt pole.
This starts tomorrow. I'm also going to work on his 'Leave it' with toys. Unfortunately, loving the flirt pole so much also means that this command apparently flies out of the window!

Sounds like a good plan - I love the idea of putting the favourite toy on the end. This is going to sound insane, but we use a broom head - it's like the most valuable thing in this house to my two weirdos! Obviously we don't let Rox catch it (bristles, gums and all that).

1. His attention span is less than a gnat's
2. "Leave" generally means, in doggie language, "Bite hard & shake until it's dead".

Re: Dempsey's new fitness regime!
Is Dempsey Ok with the Dentastixs, Rocky used to have these but they made him sick and gave him an upset tummy for ages.
Hope he gets on well with the new regime, I guess the bakery items were not doing him any good at all

I won't be using Dentastix every day though. Might chop up some carrots as well.

Re: Dempsey's new fitness regime!
Going to get started soon! Going to take chest, waist and neck measurements to track his progress, as well as respiratory recovery and endurance. Also going to keep note of how his behaviour changes - obedience, activity levels, etc.. Photos will be posted.
