Bee sting Empty Bee sting

Post by Cherry Boo Thu Aug 15 2013, 13:49

Saffy has just been stung by a bee, I told her not to play with them! Sad
It's on her lower lip just below her mouth. I removed the sting but she's already got quite a lump, how much swelling is normal?
I have some piriton tabs in the cupboard, are these ok to give and how much?

Just give her half a tablet to begin with, if it looks like it is going down then OK if not give the other half a bit later on today.

How does she seem in herself, has she reacted badly to it ? in shock ? Give her some honey on your fingers so she can lick it off this will her a bit of energy if she has gone into shock.

Just check the tablets are piriton and NOT Piriteeze.

Thanks Kathy
The tabs are piriteze, I'll have to go and buy some, which would you recommend?
She seems ok, bit quiet, what should I watch out for?

We use Tesco own brand of antihistamine for Rocky as in the image below.

Just keep an eye on her if she starts panting uncontrollably she may have gone into shock, if you are at all concerned contact the vet ASAP.

If they go into shock does it happen quite quickly or can it be a while afterwards?

I don't know for certain if they would go into shock later on, give the vet a quick ring and ask.

Allergic reactions usually occur within 24 hours after the sting - major allergic reactions often occur sooner. She's probably alright, though you may need to keep an eye on her for a while.

If she starts to exhibit any warning signs, such as shortness of breath, pale gums, weakness or shaking, you may need to pop her down to the vets. However, bee stings are usually just a mild annoyance.

Piriton is very commonly used for dogs; people usually start with half, then give the other half later on in the day. It's a good idea to give her one, as it will help to reduce the swelling and irritation.

If you have any baking soda, mixing a teaspoon of that with water to make a paste helps with stings if you leave it on for 20 minutes. Because it's on the lip, I'd only do that if you can cover it with something to stop her licking it all off.

Hope she feels better soon! Smile

Usually within one hour of the sting. After that, the chances are she'll be fine. Smile

Thanks everyone, she seems fine.
The swellings gone down and we've just come back from a lovely walk on the common. She's currently sat in front of me dribbling waiting for the last crisp in the packet which is always hers Smile

Glad to hear swelling has gone down. Marley got stung by a bee earlier this year near his eye which swelled up alot. I took him to vet and she just gave me piritan. Luckily I have a good vet who told me exactly what it was only charged me pennies for it. Due to his reaction I keep them in car and at home now.
Last time was a wasp sting on his jowls which didnt swell as much but seemed to bother him more than the bee sting. This time I just gave him a piritan and swelling was gone in a couple of hours.

Aww poor Marley, how unlucky getting stung twice! I'm hoping this has taught Saffy a lesson and she won't bother them again but probably not Big Grin
Good idea to keep some antihistamines in the car, think I'll do that too as we sometimes walk quite far from home.
