Stop lola digging
I need help asap before my gf kills lola. Lola has been digging holes around the garden but has now taken up digging in the flower bed, she is killing everyting by eating the roots. I need her to stop before we both end up in the dog house.

Re: Stop lola digging
The only way is to teach her a strong "Leave" and supervise her when she's in the garden.

Darcy has always been supervised in the garden, for my peace of mind, agree with caryll ^^^

Rocky ripped up my veggie patch in the matter of 10 minutes. Echo the above, the only way Rocky stopped digging was a strong leave and lots of supervision! Good luck

Re: Stop lola digging
We only have a concrete garden, a good Leave command should work, could you use toys as a distraction ?

Re: Stop lola digging
I've found the 'leave' command to be one of the most useful as it works for so many things!
This is how I taught it:
Start sat on the floor in front of her with some treats, hold one out on the palm of your hand right infront of her nose and say 'leave', at first she will go straight for the treat so close your hand and move it away.
Repeat this until when you hold out the treat she doesn't move towards it at all. Just for a second or two then say 'yes' or another chosen marker word and move your hand forward and allow here to eat it.
Repeat this again and again, in fact she should really be looking at you waiting to be told she can have it rather than looking at the treat.
Once you have mastered this put the treat on the floor, same principle applies she must not move towards it, then you will allow her to have it. Gradually, you will be able to stand up, walk away from her, even leave the room and she will not touch it until you come back and tell her she can.
Does that all make sense?

Re: Stop lola digging
Our trick to stop Jock digging was to hide air filled water balloons in his holes and cover them back over. Next time he went to dig they popped....he doesn't go back

Sneaky, but sounds like a good idea.
I used to have a Dobermann who used to jump our wall to get out until I discovered he was scared of fencing wire. He had once ran into a low fence as a puppy. I just laid a piece of fencing wire along the top of the wall and he wouldn't cross it.

Re: Stop lola digging
The water balloons bit is something I have heard of before - apparently it works quite effectively from what I have been told, though my understanding is that normal balloons were used.

Re: Stop lola digging
As said above only a strong "leave" command will work! Digging is a good activity for dogs to do but of course only when and where you say it's okay. Do you have anywhere that she could dig? Gwen loves to dig but she knows it's only okay in certain spots! Lola seems like she is also a digger! If possible I would have a set spot where she can dig to get it out of her system but just make sure she knows the difference and knows that she isn't allowed to just dig anywhere!
