Puppy growling and biting Empty Puppy growling and biting

Post by AmzLockey Mon Jul 22 2013, 14:32

Hello,
Looking for son advise. I have a 10week old staffy that I have had for just over 2 weeks.
Since getting him he has been mouthing etc which I was prepare for and expected with him teething etc.
However today he has went for my little girl 3 times biting her twice and not leaving go whilst growling at her.
I understand its a new environment and he has to get used to his surroundings but is there anything else I can do apart from raising my voice and saying no???? As want to get this nipped in the bud as soon as I can?

Personally I have found the yelping worked best for me.

I used the yelping and biting too which worked wonders but it takes a lot of time and patience Smile perhaps you could come say Hi :- https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/f7-new-member-introductions

First of all, persevere, it does get better although you never think it will and feel that maybe you have a vicious dog. I have two small children and tash used to go more for them, I think cause they were hyper and running around and she thinks they're her puppy pals.

I know its not advised here but we did everything else to no avail but when she got really really bad with the mouthing, we put her in her cage to calm down (not for long, but the safety of my kids was paramount).

I know people will be along to say crates shouldn't be used for punishment and im not saying they're wrong, but after exhausting all other ideas, it worked for us and she loves her crate and happily takes herself off to it now and when we're out spends her time in there even though the door is open.

Good luck, it does get better

Firm and consistent training is the key. Say 'No' when he does bite, if he continues to bite after you have said no remove him from the situation for a small period of time - We used to put Otis in the Kitchen where he couldn't cause too much trouble. Don't make eye contact with him and if you can leave the room, this only takes 15 seconds or so. Then go back and try again.
He will soon cotton on that when he bites fun ends.
He is only 10 weeks so will be learning bite inhibition.
As I have said to other members I used to play a game with Otis in which I would hide a treat in my hand and he wouldn't get unless he gave kisses - So kisses is a good thing to teach him Smile

Good luck and let us know how you get on

How old is your daughter? If she's old enough, involve her in his training. Show her what to do if he nips.

The holding on & growling isn't aggression, it's normal puppy play; he just needs to be shown what's acceptable & what isn't.

Perseverance is the key, Yelping, turning your back, time out all help, and things will improve with time.

This is just your pup wanting to play. At 10 weeks old he wants to play and this is what he thinks play is! It is definitely not aggressive and he doesn't mean to hurt you or your daughter (even if it seems like it). You need to teach him that this is an unacceptable behavior and that does take time for! In my experience there is really nothing you can do to "nip it in the bud" it will take time, consistency, and lots of patience.

When he nips say "no" firmly but don't yell and turn your back. If he continues don't say anything else, just pick him up calmly and quickly and place him in another room (like a bathroom or laundry room..puppy proof, of course) for a time out for 2 or 3 minutes. When you let him out if he has stopped nipping give him calm quiet praise, anything else can excite him and get him back into "play mode". If he continues to still nip and growl place him back in another room for another minute or so. You and everyone else in your home must be consistent and do this every time! If you do you will see progress and he will learn fairly quick that nipping/growling means play stops. Good luck!
