Loss of Fur?
Hi everyone
Yesterday rocky was rolling around on his back and I noticed he had quite a bit of fur missing from under his arm, then this morning noticed right along the side of his jaw another big patch of fur missing, no redness or spots at all, but he has been scratching that spot along his face quite a bit recently, I have made an appointment tomorrow night at the vets, but its playing on my mind what it could be, any advice?
I'll try get some pics up when he comes inside.
Thanks

Re: Loss of Fur?
Under his arm could just be from his harness? Allergies maybe? Demodex usually starts on the face so they will probably do a scrape for that. Let us know what the vet says xx

Re: Loss of Fur?
I would say harness if he wears one or if he goes to the beach and gets wet they can trap sand under their legs. Lily went through a bald stage and I got her a skin scrape but it came back ok. She goes bald underneath now and again I think it is common in Staffs

No harness at the moment, only collar, and there is no balding around that area, it is quite a big patch. He hasn't gone to the beach, and no where new, all the same walk routes, nothing different in the yard, so really unsure, ill keep you all updated after the vets

Re: Loss of Fur?
Just got back from the Vets, its Demodex, the vet has given us Advocate given him one dose tonight, and another to be given in a fortnight then another a month from then. As demodex doesn't cover tapeworm I was also advised to give him his normal worming tablet (Fenpral) next month as his normal dose, I wondered if this would be a double dose though for everything else the Advocate and Fenpral cover. We were also given a medicated shampoo and we have to see how he gets on, hopefully it clears up.
He had to have the skin scrape, he didn't like it so much across his face but was a gem when she scraped his leg, but still his normal happy self which im pleased about. I just hope it clears up! Any advice on prevention, or has the vets advice on medication and shampoo pretty much covered it?

Re: Loss of Fur?
Oh dear, poor Rocky, hugs x
It is very common for pups to get demodex because their immune system isn't fully developed yet to control the number of mites. It when an older dog gets it that it's more of a worry. I give Daisy various supplements and AVC to try and boost her immune system to keep them at bay but because Rocky is so young, the treatment from the vet should clear it up and fingers crossed that will be the last you see of it.

Re: Loss of Fur?
Oh im glad to hear that The vet was in a bit of a hurry and mumbling on about things today, not her usual self, so everything I asked went onto different topics for her today haha. But thanks Sazzle! I did do a search on the forum and read a few other cases of dogs that had Demodex including your cutie Daisy, Is she all cleared up now?

Aww poor Rocky! Hopefully it will clear up soon! I know its common in pups because their immune systems aren't as strong yet.
