Need advice about lovely dog BUT she is very aggressive towards some other dogs
Hello, I volunteer at a rescue center, and I post details of staffies looking for their new chance and forever home on this wonderful forum.
I am knowledgable about dogs, I firmly believe in positive training, rewarding the good behaviour, ignoring the undesirable/inappropriate. I often use clicker training to teach basic commands.
But I am worried about a dog I am particularly fond of. This is a link to her post on this site

Zelda is an absolute love bucket, she adores human interaction. She couldn't be more fun. BUT she can be very frighteningly aggressive towards other dogs, she seems to have a marked dislike to some other dogs at the center and can be a handful to restrain if she wants to get at them. She doesn't quite become completely focused, and can be dragged away, and 30 seconds later she is back to her sweet self. This is obviously a problem when looking to re-home her, and I adore her so much, I want her to be homed.
So, I thought I would ask the experts. What would your advice be to 'cure' or deal with this unpleasant aspect of her character? Why does she 'hate' other dogs?
I don't understand it, see this video, in this instance she seems fine, and happy to lose a wrestling match
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thPEgY4qOl0 the other dog is Bolt, who is often used to 'socialise' other dogs.
So there is hope?!?
I am sure this type of question has been asked before, but I wanted to ask in particular relation to this dog.
Any comments you have I would greatly appreciate.
Many Many thanks
Hazel

Re: Need advice about lovely dog BUT she is very aggressive towards some other dogs
Well I'm no expert in dog agression Hazel but what I do know from my own experience is that they can pick and choose. My Tommy can be very funny around other dogs and I am very aware of this so I clip on and short lead when passing , 50% of the time he doesn't bat an eye lid and the other 50% is a mix between noise and "pleased I had him close"
Have you studied our stuff on body language , as you say Bolt is used to socialise other dogs you may find some keys there

Thank you, Good idea to use Bolt as inspiration. have you got a link to your body language stuff? I don't think I am (yet) transferring, because I still don't expect her reaction when we are in the middle of a tummy rub!

Re: Need advice about lovely dog BUT she is very aggressive towards some other dogs
A very good read. shall share with some friend also interested in dog signals
Loved this bit
"Forcing the dog onto its back is the equivalent of an abusive parent beating a child to force it to say, 'I love you.' Although he or she may have forced the words out of the child's mouth, they cannot force the statement to be true.... "
Not sure it has helped me with Zelda though. Maybe I am over reacting a bit. I shall take more notice of her trigger, see if I can spot something
Thank you so much for your input
